We visited the garden centre in Kelso to purchase arts and crafts for my children to do in time for Christmas. But little did we know that they have recently removed the Art and Crafts from their shelves permanently. So disappointing.
I have visited Mayfield on numerous occasions, usually for a drink and a scone, which are always delicious. This time, I decided to try a Mediterranean omelette that was supposed to come with chips and salad. Even though I didn't want the chips, there was no reduction in price (costing almost £13). I thought I could at least get a larger side of salad instead, but unfortunately, the omelette was huge with what seemed like six eggs in it - too much for one person. The only vegetables I could identify were tomatoes and courgette, and the salad was disappointing. My first omelette had to be sent back as it was undercooked, almost raw inside. The staff had no issue replacing it, but the taste was still lacking - adding cheese would have helped. I also dislike how it was served on a wooden chopping board instead of a clean china plate. Service at Mayfield is hit and miss, and even though the staff are friendly, it can take a long time to be served. Kelso has many great dining options, and if Mayfield wants to attract more customers, they need to improve the quality of their food as the prices do not match the experience.
I had the fish , mostly batter !!! It came with a handful of chips , cold mushy peas , dried out tartar sauce and the bread and butter was stale with margarine and not butter as offered on the menu . All in all cafe food at al a carte prices , don't eat here unless you enjoy being ripped off ... Also the bread had green mould on the edge , this place is a joke !
Stange place. On the one hand we would highly recommend the garden centre and especially the garden plants section, which is utterly superb (as is the fresh fruit and veg. section). But what a let down the restaurant food was. We ordered an avocado and humous sandwich which was served on what appeared to be cheap shop bought brown bread apparently un buttered. The thin smear of avocado on one slice and humous on the other (with dreary carrot grated on top) meant that it was uncomfortably dry, accentuated by un dressed salad and salty crisps. It needed a whole pot of tea to wash it down, otherwise would have been inedible. Meanwhile the other gourmet fish finger sandwich was served on what appeared to be cheap, unbuttered, shop bought white bread, making it claggy, un appetising and difficult to eat. Not worth the money. The staff were very pleasant though. Thoughts for what it 's worth, our experience is that we had planned a trip to Kelso, but had previously read your reviews on the Mayfield Garden Centre restaurant, and had decided to eat elsewhere. But we found that parking in Kelso Town Centre was impossible. The Mayfield Restaurant was busy and we had to queue, so perhaps other people also experienced our parking difficulties and veered towards the this place, simply because there is ample parking. We won 't return.
