I would give this place 4 stars as I wasn't extremely impressed, but it's prepacked food so my expectations weren't too high. They also sell packaged snacks, but not many of them are vegan.
The food at this restaurant was delicious! It is located in the building next to the temple and offers an extensive menu with many mock meat options. The employees may not speak English, but they have an English menu and can easily help with ordering. I tried the mushroom teriyaki, which was the best I've had in China. It was served on a hot sizzling plate and the portion size was very generous. My companion had the meatballs, which were equally impressive. Everything was vegan and incredibly tasty. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant when in Shanghai, you won't be disappointed.
We had a great lunch at Yun Lai Ji. The lunch menu is posted on the wall and features noodle dishes. We highly recommend their wonton soup (Hundun; 混沌) as it is their specialty. Just make sure to arrive early before it sells out! The menu is displayed on the wall with pictures, and you pay at the counter before finding a seat. The restaurant is located through the gate on the east side of the main temple entrance. It may seem like you are entering the temple, but it is actually a separate building. The map location in the app is accurate, but the name is in traditional Chinese characters only. The staff is friendly, although they may be hesitant to communicate with non-Chinese speakers (they do not speak English). If you know a bit of Chinese, you should be fine. We plan to return to try their dinner in the future!
I ordered only two of the prepared chilled dishes to go: the kaofu and vegetarian duck both were pretty good. I should probably give this place 4 stars because it is not as if I were blown away, but then it is prepacked eating how good can that be, and I should not punish them for my choices. they also sell packed snacks, but note that few are vegan.
The soup was delicious, remember to keep her reception!
