I can't believe I just found this place it's been there for years if you love pupusas get yourself here. I'm sorry I didn't take pictures but I'll be back in at pictures next time the pupusas are very large I'm used to them being about 4 inches in diameter these are like seven or eight. they are so well prepared and had a great choice of feelings I went with the bean and cheese and the revueltas. Try all three sauces they're all fantastic but the orange ear one is definitely the spiciest. Choose your time carefully cuz the place is busy and there's a fair amount of seating but not a ton the staff was great and very helpful
El Pulgarcito is a lovely Salvadorean Restaurant in Merriam, KS. The day I visited, it happened to be my birthday, and I was so excited to try something new. Seating was open, and there was plenty of space, even though the restaurant was pretty full. After looking over the menu, I decided I needed to try a little bit of everything. After a short chat with my waitress, I decided to try the mixed pupusas. Man oh man! They were absolutely delicious, especially with the house coleslaw/jalapeño mix piled on. Now on to my main dish! I had the fried tilapia and green plantains. I thought the plantains were okay, I put sauce on them to add a little flavor. I will be honest and say I was expecting sweet, but they were more salty, not overly salty though. The tilapia was absolutely delicious! I haven't had a whole fried fish (bone-in) in years. It was fried hard (perfect in my opinion) and the fish was very moist. I really loved the atmosphere in the restaurant. There were groups of families and friends eating, talking, listening to music and having a good time. I will definitely be back!
Service was excellent! I will have to say after reading all the great reviews of this place I was disappointed when I ate here. Granted when you drive up it does look like a hole in the wall establishment and you are wondering what all the hype is about. The only drinks available were in a bottle (pop), fruity type ones in the containers, and Sprite was the only fountain drink as all the others were out. I ordered a beef taco, which consisted of beef and the tortilla. The beef was very crispy/burnt. I'm used to tomatoes, cheese, and lettuce on a taco so that was a disappointment. I also ordered the Steak Papua, which was different to say the least. It's very greasy and the steak tasted burnt. The slaw that came with it was nasty. Also first time I've ever been to this type of establishment and never received complimentary chips/salsa. Just disappointing.
I love the food here. Everything I have tried is amazing but the papusas are the best I've ever had. If you don't know what those are, try them... handmade tamales basically flattened and in the shape of a disk. The slaw that goes in these has a lot of flavor and has the right amount of bite. The Horchata is really good also. The service is always quick and on point. The building is a small hole in the wall place behind BP. You would t know it's here unless you were looking for it.
