It used to be an antique store started in the 50s, prior to that was a saloon. Sarah, took over the antique store from her mother, and she and her husband turned into a teahouse 16 years ago. Silverplume is a tiny tiny town, the train runs through it, most of the buildings are abandoned. It's right off the highway after you passed Georgetown on your way up to the mountains. The roads our dirt. There was all jazz music playing in the tea room. And still many antiques around. I was the only customer when I walked in, but was shortly after joined by Don, an older man comes every Saturday for pancakes. I had English breakfast tea and scone and a side of bacon. The bacon was overcooked, but the tea was excellent, and the homemade scones was delightful. As I was walking in, to women were walking out and told me that everything on the breakfast menu is delicious. I simply wasn't very hungry. I stayed for a few hours sipping on my tea, working on a blog post, and reading. Intermittently talking with the owner, the other sweet lady who works there, and an assortment of guests. The decor is outdated, but it's an antique store! The staff couldn't be better. This is a little treasure of a place, and I'll be back.
We came to Silver Plume on a whim, to see where Bread and Dram was. Most sites I visited described this city as a ghost town, so I didn't expect to see much life there, but we got out to explore. Our first stop and closest to where we parked was the Silver Plume Tea Room. It's an old establishment that has been with the same family for 2-3 generations. There are antiques, but what caught our eye were the antique tea sets then the breads and desserts. Then the friendly greeting caught out attention. We started chatting with the owner and her friends and decided to stay. It was a good decision. We chatted some more, enjoyed our tea, had some second breakfast, and even got to see a pretty cool house.
Silver Plume Tea Room should never, under any circumstances, receive less than 5 stars. It 's a small, old building in Silver Plume (population of 200 in the summer, 100 in the winter). The Tea Room sells antiques, and each table is uniquely decorated with such. They have an incredible and extensive tea list, as well as a small food menu, most of which are made from scratch. Beyond that was the incredibly impeccable and kind service. When the woman told me what the soup of the day was, upon my hesitate she asked if I 'd like to try it. Sure I said, and in a few minutes she returned with small ramekins (at least 5 bites worth) for EACH of us at the table. A few minutes later, tiny cinnamon buns appeared on the table. We ordered our tea and asked if they had lemon and honey. The honey came out in the cutest porcelain. This porcelain was 100% made to do nothing else in it 's life except hold honey. It was SO cute. A while passed and we though the woman forgot our lemons. Nope. Turns out she was just in the back picking out the seeds by hand. My friend and I decided we wanted to share the soup. Naturally, without us asking, they split the soup (and its accompaniments of cheese and fruit) onto separate plates. The staff there waited on us hand and foot, never ceasing to smile. We took home a freshly baked loaf of break and two pecan treats. They do an amazing thing at the Tea Room. I hope to find so many more of these gems in life, and return as often as I can.
I’ve never encountered a tea room with such unique charm and delectable food. We were fortunate to visit on a day when they were serving Pasties. I absolutely love Pasties; my first one was in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and it had been a while since I last had one. So you can imagine my excitement to find a place making them locally. For those who may not know, miners used to take Pasties with them to work. If you’re ever in Silver Plume, make sure to stop by this place—it's definitely worth a visit! I do wish there were more antiques on display, but the ones in the basement were still really fascinating.
Last summer, we stayed in Silver Plume, and even though our B&B offered breakfast, we couldn't resist visiting the Tea Room whenever it was open! My husband absolutely adores their buttermilk pecan pie, and I found everything to be delicious. We also scheduled an afternoon tea, which was delightful. This summer, we'll be returning from Virginia and are hoping to find them open again!
