I would perch on the small stools, soaking in the sights, sounds, and vibrant atmosphere. The kitchen could sometimes get intense, but it never escalated to flying dishes. The patrons were often loud, yet they stopped short of physical confrontations. The lines at the register could get long, but customers remained patient. While waiting to get inside, I would drop a quarter into the candy machine and navigate through the bustling crowd. Once seated, I'd read the newspaper or revisit the historic menu. As for the food, I consider myself an expert on just one dish: the Alaskan Burger, which I've ordered at least twenty times. It's consistently juicy and satisfying. Recently, I had the chance to revisit Sal's after a six-year break, and it did not disappoint. On this trip, I brought family along, sharing nostalgic memories as we drove to the restaurant. It was packed to the brim, but we managed to secure a table behind the row of stools. I was eager for some lively diner antics. The staff appeared overwhelmed, and I overheard one server say, "It's 11, so I'm out," as she disappeared into the kitchen, hinting that service might be slow from that point on. Our server was pleasant and friendly, doing a commendable job despite the hectic environment. I ordered the Alaskan Burger, and just like before, it was delicious. Everyone at our table was pleased with their meals. Sal's is truly a diner, complete with greasy comfort food, lively drama, and excellent people-watching opportunities. Expect classic diner coffee, service, and fare. If you're looking for a hearty meal that can satisfy your hunger or absorb a few drinks, this is the place to be. In the realm of diners, Sal's holds a special place. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
I had a fantastic time here—it truly reminded me of my past. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, I frequented many small-town diners, and this one ranks among the best. The menu features classic diner fare along with daily specials. The burgers were delicious, and the prices were quite reasonable by Alaska standards. The waitresses were not only fun, reminiscent of “Mel! Kiss my grits!” but also very attentive. The decor matched the charming name of the restaurant, and it was easy to locate. My best friend insisted on bringing me here, knowing I would enjoy it, and he was absolutely right. I will definitely be coming back!
When we arrived in the middle of the day, the place was mostly empty with only two other tables occupied. We ended up waiting over an hour for our food. There was just one cook and one or two waitstaff on duty. Our orders came out slowly, and when I asked about my salad, the waiter vanished for a while. When he finally returned, he leaned over our table as if sharing a secret, and told us that the cook was being uncooperative and didn't want to make the salad. He then asked if I wanted something else, which was shocking and completely inappropriate. In the end, I settled for some dry toast due to food allergies to certain margarine and lactose intolerance. I was just so hungry that I would take anything. Instead, the toast I received was practically burnt and slathered in margarine. We also shared a cinnamon roll, but it was the driest and stale thing I've ever had. It might have improved with a minute in the microwave to soften it up, but it was truly awful. As someone who bakes regularly, I could tell this roll had either been left out to dry or was well over a week old. Fortunately, I know I'm not alone in my opinion. Two women from Soldotna visited my workplace in Anchorage and confirmed my feelings about Sal's being a poor establishment. The next time I find myself passing through Soldotna, I’ll stick to the delicious Moose Bakery or just bring my own food.
Went to High School in Kenai and this place has been a staple. But I do think the past few times the food quality quantity level had dropped. Ordered the chicken fried steak...WHAT!?! You are out??? Not at Sal's!!! Wife's salad bowl is quarter full of water when she is done. My Alaska Burger was Delicious!!! But it wasn't the HUGE burger Patty I remember. It was more like one of the better tasting sandwich I've had in a while... But I wanted a burger...thick juicy one!!! Still the kids LOVED the food. I might have too high of expectations. I know it's different but we didn't eat at the Land's End hotel in Homer so we could eat here. I'm still going to keep coming back. I LOVE this place. Maybe just a little dip? Hope it is and it comes back. There was no question when I walked in my review was going to be an easy 5 star. Nope, 2 stars till I come back again. Breaks my heart...really!
The food was certainly good, I had the fish and chips. The waitstaff was nice, but she spilled tartar sauce on my pants. It's ok, it could have happened to anyone. The train thing is kinda cool, if you're into that sort of thing. It's setup for tourists, with the prices a bit high for your typical greasy spoon type places.
