I enjoyed their delicious homemade Mediterranean Vegetable soup, which was served with a cheese scone - a perfect combination! The coffee was excellent, I even had a second double espresso. The prices were reasonable, making it great value for money.
This restaurant is absolutely terrible. It's a total rip-off with substandard food. There is no variety, just sandwiches that are handmade, wrapped in cling film, and thrown together. There is no information on allergens, so it's best to avoid if you have any allergies. The scones fall apart as soon as you try to cut into them. Prices are not displayed, probably because they are extremely high. The chocolate fudge slice I had was dry and tasted awful. The place is dirty and needs a thorough cleaning. The presentation of the food also needs improvement. It is too expensive for a family meal or snacks. The toilets smell terrible, indicating a drainage issue. Avoid this place at all costs.
I visited this restaurant today. I ordered a steak and kidney pie with chips and beans. The pie was lukewarm, the beans were cold, and the chips arrived 20 minutes after the pie and beans were served. My husband ordered a jacket potato with coronation chicken, which he said was very tasty, but he had finished his meal by the time mine arrived, so I had to send it back to be reheated. The prices are a bit high for the quality of the food.
Surely to goodness we can dish up something better than this pathetic effort to greet the tourists in our “World Heritage Site”. With two hungry toddlers, we had no option but to eat in this service forsaken establishment. Exorbitant pricing for the meagre selection on offer. It was only 1:30 pm and we were advised that the kitchen had no bread with which to make the kids a plain sandwich. No hot food on offer. The soup pot was empty but they did manage to rustle up some disgusting “packet soup” that was loosely described as “Pea Ham”…….it was served with a scone runny butter. The two “Senior Kitchen Staff” appeared to be in crisis talks while their bewildered young serving staff were left to face our International guests, most of whom did an about turn and left the facility and most likely cut short their experience of one of Scotland’s “prime tourist attractions”. This surely cannot be a commercially viable business who fronts up this abomination? It reeks of a Council run effort……. The Lanarkshire Council Directors will no doubt be enjoying their vacations on The Riviera, meanwhile on The River Clyde, we Scots are being served a Big Riddy!
Wonderful day spent at New Lanark Mills, however badly tarnished by the appalling food offer, rip off prices and haphazard service in this so called cafe. Reading the other reviews it is clear the operator of this business (council? has any interest in providing a quality experience. As a Scot, I was embarrassed to see a group of overseas visitors so unimpressed they walked out! The management of the Trust need to get a grip of this situation, either improve or terminate the franchise. To continue to do nothing is simply undermining the overall visitor experience and worse by tarnishing the good reputation of Scottish food and service.
