Feedback gevenWe went to SMAK because of the extensive gluten free options for me but we were amazed at just how good the cooking was- lots of flavours and textures perfectly balanced. I had the Mexican baked eggs which was a large meal and just exploded in flavour- best meal in a very long time. My partner had the eggs benedict which he described as a major enhancement to a normal benedict - a great mix of textures and flavours. The coffee was great and all around can't recommend this cafe highly enough!
A stylishly decorated space with interesting food options with emphasis on fresh ingredients. My pumpkin and chickpea fritters came with avocado a softly cooked egg on top. Nicely garnished with chilli and lots of fresh coriander. Staff were friendly and they made me a custom takeaway order without any issue. A great breakfast option. They also contribute part of their profits to supporting mnd research.
Looking around Chapel Street for a quick bite to eat isn't always easy; primarily due to the vast amount of cafes around but also due to the challenge of finding parking.SMAK is located up a side street whereby you have a carpark (paid but not overly expensive) right opposite. The initial impressions is that this is a cafe that the owner has put thought into its design. It's has a look of beauty and a look of commercial all in one- it works well together. The service was friendly by the wait staff, it did take a little while for meals to arrive- just over 15min, which is around 5min more than most cafes I experience. The food itself; meals chosen were the:- SMAKED AVO- WAFFLED ROSTI BENEDICTPresentation for both dishes were rustic, well presented in my view.Whilst the flavours worked well in the Benedict, the pulled pork didn't taste seasoned, in a way it was rather bland. The Apple Yuzu hollandaise was delicious however. The smashed avo was the pick- the turmeric sweet corn fritters added good texture and were delicious and the finger lime was a good addition to the dish. The avocado was flavoursome with the mint and goats cheese but I felt the quantity of avocado was lacking somewhat.Coffee:Both coffees (latte and long macchiato) were of a good standard.Beans used are from St Ali coffee roasters.SUMMARYA good cafe. I wasn't "wowed" but at the same time it was better than average. If you are looking for brunch that is easy to park with a decent menu, I do recommend giving this place a try.Alternatively, if you are in the area and are seeking a good quality coffee to takeaway then I also recommend.Service Efficiency. 3/5Atmosphere/Ambiance. 4/5Quality of Coffee. 4/5Quality of Food. 4/5Price Range (Low, Medium, High): MediumValue for money. 3/5Availability of Restrooms. 4/5Parking Availability. 5/5Total 27/35
I found this hidden gem on a small side street. The food is nutritious and caters to a variety of tastes. The smashed avocado was delicious. My husband tried "The SMAK" and really enjoyed it. The flavors were fantastic, and the service was top-notch. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to South Yarra.
The baked eggs and eggs Benedict are delicious! The coffee is also excellent. The restaurant has some construction going on outside, but once that's finished, it will be a fantastic place to eat. I will definitely return!
