Cover on Friday night of $10. The staff was great. So... welcome, nice and attentive (the second time we sat at the bar and my water was never empty! He had for the first time Toutons --delicious (my husband had Nachos--they were good, but I don't think Newfoundland is the place for big salsa. I would go back here in a heartbeat (we could do this tonight!
College Bar atmosphere. Small stage for music. I would imagine that the experience differs according to what band plays. But the bar itself is kind of dingey and dark- nothing special. Great. George Street is also NOT to write at home, about a college bar atmosphere... on the street. A guy knocked out another guy and then ripped off his shirt and bent on the street when the poor guy was unconscious in the middle of the street. Not recommended.
We wandered George Street looking for somewhere for a drink and dinner on a Friday late afternoon and were moved to O 'Reilly's as it was the only pub playing live music. We sat quickly at a table on the terrace, but not given... every menu. It seemed to be just a waitress for the terrace to serve with maybe a dozen tables and 40-50 cartridges. We borrowed menus from a neighboring table, and after about 20 minutes the waitress managed down to order drinks that lasted another 20 minutes or so arrive. We weren't in the rush, and I didn't care how we had a chance to enjoy the music. Dinner and another round of drinks required more flags from the waitress and more. The food when it came was meh... Fish and chips were not the best I ever had. Go for the music and the atmosphere. But the food? Not so much.
We thought of drinks and a starter. There was live music and the atmosphere was funny. Really old pub so don't expect it to be modern and unusual because it's not about it. The menu is pub-style food and looked good....We had deep-fried cheese bites and they were delicious. There were many fish/seafood options on the menu as well as Moose Burger.
Today we figured we would stop in for a drink and an app on a hot day. We walked in the door, no signs to seat yourself or wait. Finally the tendy just told us to grab a seat. Eventually a server brought us what...appeared to be a printed newspaper. She came back and asked if we wanted a drink. Not being from here I asked for a beer I had another restaurant. She quickly told me they didn 't serve that. I then asked for a local beer at home. This time she scoffed they didn 't serve that. I explained lots of restaurants serve beer from out of province as an import. I told her i would settle for a glass of water. Finally she opened the news paper to the middle and said that is where the drink menu was. Neither my wife nor I had any idea the menu was there. I settled for a bottle of Molson and my wife a diet Pepsi as well as Newfoundland Poutine and an order of kettle chips. The food wasn 't too bad but didn 't give any wows!! Having listened to Jigs and Reels on several Sundays I 've heard O 'Reilly mentioned a lot. After making it to St. John 's we finally were able to check out O 'Reilly to end in a disappointment. In the past two weeks we spent time in Ottawa and Toronto. In both cities pubs we were in were very up front in explaining the brew they serve and not scoff at requests. Several pubs I 've been in even offer suggestions and even a small shot glass sample of their microbrew so the customer is more informed. I guess to sum it up Meh would be the best word. Food wasn 't bad. Service could be a lot better. Customer relations could be a hell of a lot better. Perhaps it was a one off, for us being in town for two more nights it was a first impression. Cheers!
