The best place to relax and have nice conversations with friends. Not crowded by party visitors.
This is about as close to a traditional pub as I have found in Charlottesville. This is not a hipster hangout with a gluten-free menu and locally-sourced free-range llama burgers. If you demand impeccable service then you will be disappointed. The last two times I've been to CST it was the middle of the week. There has been one guy (Jeff) running the place (waiter, cook, cashier) and he is friendly if a little reserved. It's best to ask what is not available when sit down so you'd don't get disappointed. Ask the cook what's good and be flexible enough to take his suggestion. The Reuben and the Weisswurst I'd had have both been tasty simple meals. The food and beer are reasonably priced. This place has been here since 1976 and it feels like it when you walk in (in a good way). It's a quiet and comfortable place to have a few beers and chat with friends. Don't come with the same expectations that you'd have for the trendy/pricey place down the street and you'll have a good time.
I love the wide selection of European beer. Germans and Belgians are my favorite, and they are hard to find elsewhere.
Went on a Saturday night and were the only ones there for an hour. Server(? was unhelpful with the menu and didn't seem to listen (had to ask for the check 3 times . Could literally hear him microwaving the instant coffee. Food was microwave dinner level in portions that made most appetizers look like a main course. Walked down to Main St afterwards and had so many regrets.
