La Casa del Catador - Subtanjalla

I visited El Catador for the second time recently and would not return. Although it’s a nice opportunity to try local specialties like carapulcra con sopa seca (dried potatoes in a stew with noodles on the side), the prices are high for the region. The...restaurant does a ton of business with the tourists – guides get free lunch for bringing visitors to eat there. It was difficult to get the food we ordered as the service was quite slow and we never received our drinks despite asking repeatedly. They also don’t actually have everything that’s listed on the menu.

The place is well organized, a nice surprise that after we order the food we were taken to a mini tour and learn the process if making piscos and wines, at the end you can taste many of them, and the staff give the best...to be friendly. After the tasting traditional food were waiting for us, don't miss arroz con pato !!

Our guide recommended eating here and it was fine. The food was kind of bland, not our best meal, but ok. The main issue was how slow the service was. It took over an hour to order and get the food which just seemed painful...since it was really warm out.

We ordered the trio with sopa seca, carapulcra and arroz con pato. It came in a good amount for two (we also shared a salad), but the service wasn't really good as we didn't go in with a large tourist group (no attention). Prices are...mid-range: with the trio, salad and juice we spent around soles.

We came to visit the winery the tour was free and excellent. We tried lots of different pisco and we were very happy with it. We decided to have some food while there. There was absolutely no vegetarian options. I kindly asked if something...was possible. The waitresses were bored to death and had no interest in serving us. Finally one went to the chef and told me they could make a vegetarian rice with vegetables. My partner took some chicken and fries. I also ordered a tea. We were the only ones in the restaurant yet it took forever for our drink or food to arrive. When it was there, the chafa was the worse I have had in Peru. It was so tasteless I couldn't finish it. My partner's meal was terrible. My tea arrived at the end of the meal after I reminded it to the lady who had forgotten it. Chicken and fries, vegetarian chafa and a cup of tea ended up being soles. I don't mind paying for excellent food but this is just a tourist trap with an appalling service. Don't eat there!
