Always on the look out for a good dumpling place without having to go into Chinatown (lazy as I just want somewhere local. This place soared past my expectations for a few reasons, the food was exceptionally tasty (we ordered the $35 a head banquet. ...A great diversity of dumplings including Peking duck pancakes. and the two main dishes that came out were cooked exceptionally well cooked and tasty (bbq with Asian greens and salt and pepper squid. The venue is quirky and fun the staff member Jazz was attentive and had a great sense of humour and really added to the evening. I will definitely come back.
We found this little gem on our way to Belvoir and just stumbled in. What a find ! Craft beers, little jewels of dumplings we had two serves of the set dumpling menu and they were amazing !!! Back on the street 40 minutes...later full, happy and ready for the theatre.
I ate here with a friend on Saturday 21st November we tried about 5 different dumpling dishes, they were all as good as I've ever had anywhere (think similar quality to Din Tai Fung if you know it!? and the prices were very...reasonable! About $10/plate and we finished the dinner with some caramel and chocolate spring rolls, on the recommendation of the helpful waitress (she wasn't wrong, they were really great! . The bill came to about $30 each for food, plus drinks on top although I went a bit overboard when I saw that they had Tasmania's finest Sullivan's Cove whisky (in Oak Barrels , which was a rare find in a Sydney bar it was $25 for a generous pour on the rocks, pure warmth mmmm My only suggestion for improvement would be to put a few more things like paintings or rugs on the walls to help soak up the sound its almost all brick, and the sound echoes a lot, so that it can be hard to hear the person opposite you when its busy. Or maybe I'm just getting old?
I've been to the Bamboo Dumpling Bar once before over a year ago and thought it would be a great idea to try this little restaurant out again. Based in Surry Hills, it is a small restaurant and can seat about 50 people at benches...whilst the interior is decorated with bird cages hanging from the ceiling. There are also pieces of art work decorating the restaurant which brings some life to the place. Every day they have a different special and the special for Sunday was $10 dumpling mix plate which consisted of 6 dumplings with different fillings in each including prawn, pork and chive, mushroom, vegetarian, and two others. We also ordered the BBQ Pork Buns,Chilli Beef Buns and the Peking Duck Pancakes. Each of these dishes had 4 pieces per serve. This food is great for sharing and it comes out as it is cooked and all the dishes were super tasty, but I particularly loved the duck pancakes and hoisin sauce yum! I found it a little on the pricey side, but we had the Entertainment Card giving us 25% off the bill so with the discount it was reasonable. If I didn't have the card I would still come here as the food is good, you get served quickly and there are different specials everyday to try out too which are reasonably priced at $10. As we were here around 3pm it was very easy to get a table as it was fairly quiet with about 10 other diners. If you love dumplings and buns then I would suggest you give the Bamboo Dumpling Bar a try.
