Eventually, I managed to flag down one of the waitstaff and asked for a couple of menus. She looked at me blankly and then walked away, returning to the table next to us without bringing us any menus. Realizing we wouldn’t be served, we decided to leave. Overall, it was a strange and disappointing experience, and we will not be returning.
Inside, the restaurant was busy with other diners; we didn’t walk into an empty place just starting to open. We left feeling confused and wondering why we weren't seated. While we had no problem waiting longer for our food, not seating a party at an empty table that wasn’t reserved felt like they didn’t want us there but were too hesitant to say so. Considering it’s a wine and tapas bar, they could have easily accommodated us by letting us order drinks while we waited for our food. To make matters worse, Rojo Tapas and Wine didn’t even take our name or number, which made it clear they weren’t going to call us when the kitchen was ready; we were just expected to return in exactly 20 minutes. We ended up choosing another restaurant down the street instead. We contemplated calling to let them know that we weren’t concerned about their kitchen prep, but it honestly felt like they didn’t want us there in the first place. Since they didn't take our name or number, what was the point? It's unfortunate because we don't live far from this place, but after this experience, I wouldn’t return even if offered an incentive. The awkward stares from the other diners and staff made it clear we weren’t welcome. Clearly, they have enough regulars to keep them busy, which is good for them. Lastly, I hesitated to mention this, but given that our entire party was not white, the entire experience left a bad taste in our mouths. To the restaurant: if you require reservations to prepare for walk-in customers, please make that clear on your website or Google business page. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
The staff insisted that their inability to accommodate us wasn't due to the kitchen preparing to close, but simply because they weren't ready. The restaurant was already filled with other diners, so it wasn't as though we had arrived at a quiet time when no one was there. Feeling confused, we left without understanding why we weren’t seated. We’re okay with waiting longer for our food, but it doesn’t make sense to deny a party access to an empty, available table. It felt like we weren't wanted there, but they weren't honest about it. As a wine and tapas bar, it would seem reasonable to seat customers and have them order wine while waiting for their food. Additionally, Rojo Tapas and Wine did not take our name or number, which meant they wouldn’t contact us when the kitchen was supposedly ready. We were just expected to return in exactly 20 minutes. Ultimately, we decided to go to another restaurant nearby. We even considered calling them to explain that they shouldn’t worry about preparing the kitchen for us, but it felt clear that they didn’t want us there in the first place, especially since they didn’t take down our information. It’s unfortunate, as we don’t live far from this restaurant, but I wouldn't want to return just to be met with judging looks from the other patrons and the owners—especially since they likely have enough regulars to operate without us. Lastly, I hate to bring up race, but I feel it's worth mentioning that our entire party was non-white, and the whole interaction left us with a very negative impression. To the restaurant: if you require reservations for your kitchen staff to prepare properly and cannot accommodate walk-ins, please make that clear on your website or Google business page.
Refused our group of 4 and got a stink eye from the owner. We are local and asian, so this was a huge disappointment. Not going to try again, unless I wanted to be in a bad mood. Thanks owners and the restaurant
A wonderful spot to enjoy light food and great wine in Tivoli. Great people working there. Calm, quiet, fun. And delicious.
