Casual dining.I had the pork ramen - very good, the potato dashi - good, potatoes a bit al dente, and the pepper noodle divine - but caution a bit spicy. The seven spice sour was a frozen cocktail. Service almost perfect. The waiter was great but the host was more occupied with cleaning the windows ;-(
This restaurant seating is around the kitchen and you can see the craftsmen and women prepare your multi course meal in front of you. They serve tasting menu with or without wine pairings. I would recommend with wine pairings. The staff, the chefs, the food and wines are just wonderful and excite your palate. I have done a lot of tasting menus here and abroad and would say that this is as good as it gets in Toronto. Just go and try it for the sake of experiencing something unique.
Staff were courteous, pleasant and friendly - from the valet outside to the head chef. Also, the presentations of the dishes were some of the best we've seen!Unfortunately, dishes were lackluster to say the least. Shrimp with nutmeg were way too salty, while the roast beef was lacking in the salt department. The small bits of lamb were quite tender, but made our stomachs turn with the amount of oil. Literally - my wife threw up within 30 seconds of making it home. The cake with banana ice cream was way too sweet - felt like I punched my pancreas in the head so it hit me back with hyperglycemia. The best thing was the sour dough bread with sweet butter.... c'mon a $300 meal and the best thing is a small slice of bread? The 5 year old cheddar had a really nice flavour, but again the crust it was sitting on was soaking in oil. Overall we obviously will not be going back. We've had tasting menu's from across Canada, with many in Toronto... this by far was the biggest dinner disappointment my wife and I have ever had.Again, staff are A+! But we strongly recommend a different establishment if your purpose of going out to dinner is to have a delicious meal.
We were here with family to celebrate my son's 20th birthday. I would say the food combinations were great overall. However, I think the "acidity" was a little overused and a tad heavy in the flavouring. The nutmeg for the shrimp dish was overpowering, wasting the sweet taste of the side stripe shrimps. After the first piece, I tasted the remaining shrimps without the nutmeg and they were great. There were a lot of positives about this place. Chef Jed Smith was excellent, very friendly and explained the dishes to us as they were served. Most dishes were excellently prepared, especially the beef dishes, the tartar and the roast beef were done to perfection. The crab meat was fresh and well presented. The desserts, even though we were all stuffed by then, were polished off without hesitations.Chef Jed is a young man with an impressive resume, but I think he will get even better in a few years. While this place is not cheap, there is still a lot of value to be gained sitting at the counter seeing your food being meticulously prepared. I would definitely come back for a revisit, perhaps in a year or so's time. I am sure I will be pleasantly surprised.
There are few restaurants in Toronto that give you the experience of personal dining. 4 chefs in front of you, expertly crafting your next bite. Not a cheap experience but considering the level of the ingredients, technique and passion, the cost is actually quite the bargain. You would easily pay twice the amount in NYC!
