La Porta A Viarolo - Trecasali

Just had an excellent lunch at this typical Parma restaurant just 10 minutes drive outside the city centre. Don't be put off by the roadside appearance as from the outside it just looks like another tratoria but believe me this is one of the top places to eat in this area if you want to taste the real food of Parma. We were a party of 4 and had a typical starter of Prosciutto di Parma with Salami ,Lardo and hot Torta Fritta. Although the pasta dishes here are remarkable, and inspire of pressure from my 3 Italian friends to try one of these dishes,l, I followed with a beautifully prepared fillet of pork with artichoke in a creme source with roast potatoes, whilst my friends all enjoyed hand prepared tortilla which the chef prepares by hand to order (i.e. not pre prepared or frozen). My sweet was a fantastic zabaglione in a rum source which was wonderfully light. The wine selection is wide and the menu, whilst not extensive, is focused on the best available produce in this area. I heard that one of the chefs even gave up a career as an architect to come and work here and it shows the high level of passion and dedication to the food in this food capital of Italy. A must visit for anyone who wants to eat the real Parmesan cuisine.

I was taken to this amazing restaurant by a friend who lives in the region. I would never have gone otherwise as it's not in the center of Parma and looks very simple from the road. I am so glad I did go. The chef is known for making her own pasta on the premises and you can taste the difference. We shared portions of the traditional tortelli with cheese and herbs in a butter sauce and tortellini with seasonal porcini mushrooms. I was in heaven. The taste was divine. It's worth the trip. And the restaurant itself is rustic and just what you want from an Italian eatery. I cannot recommend this enough.
