We ate here in Feb 2015 by recommendation and found it sloppy and unwelcoming. The staff were more interested in their friends and cronies lurking around than the paying customers! Food average, beer warm and bill privy. Looked for it this year out of curiosity; unsurprisingly it's now gone...
My husband and I travel to Kovalam every February for a yoga retreat. Spoonbill is a fantastic spot for enjoying juices and snacks. Their watermelon juice is outstanding and the masala papadams are delicious. The atmosphere has a more surfer/beachy vibe rather than traditional Indian.
The food at this restaurant is decent, but lacks the traditional Japanese flair one would expect. It is also overpriced. However, the biggest letdown is the quality of service. The staff seem more focused on their own personal matters than providing good service. Additionally, the male-dominated environment can create an uncomfortable atmosphere for young foreign females. Proceed with caution.
The restaurant allows mistreatment of women, especially younger western women. The bar staff exploit their knowledge and position, so be cautious. It's a shame because the food has potential to be quite good. This review comes from a former male customer, written on the night before Valentine's Day.
