While I was waiting for my turkey sub (which was YUMMY), a tall Lithuanian woman, about 6'4", cut in front of me—though I was the only one in line—and ordered a Reuben. An interesting character she referred to as Jerry Rubin emerged from the freezer and left with her! I also noticed her reading a Lithuanian newspaper, which seemed unusual, especially since there were two big guys wearing dark sunglasses and earpieces watching me closely. It turned out that the woman was Dalia Grybauskaite, the President of Lithuania, enjoying some Lithuanian cookies and drinking groseunie, a beverage similar to a Lithuanian Red Bull. It's quite surprising to find all this happening in Union Pier! The restaurant has the New York Times and the New Buffalo Gazette available, and I opted to read the New Buffalo Gazette since it seemed less depressing.
I stopped in for a quick bite and found one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in my life! Please recommend the Classic Piaggia to your friends and family if you are trying to earn their love and respect.
This place has been around since I was a toddler and has transformed into a charming market with a diverse selection for a small town. The deli makes delicious sandwiches; my favorite is the Reuben. The freezer is filled with a variety of refreshing drinks. There's also a fantastic Lithuanian-style ice cream bar. Additionally, you'll find beautifully decorated Easter eggs next to an array of baked goods.
I've passed by this restaurant countless times, but I finally decided to stop in today after a friend's recommendation. What a wonderful find! Their sandwiches are incredibly tasty, and the staff is really friendly and helpful. The restaurant has a charming, hometown vibe that I found quite refreshing. Little do they know, they've just gained a lifelong customer! We definitely need more places like this!
I will say, the sandwiches were delicious that we ordered, however, the service and experience were concerning. 5 star food, 1 star service. We came on Sunday, so it was in the heat of Memorial Day Weekend. The woman at the front was extremely rude and visibly flustered. She kept saying how the deli workers needed a break and it had been constant since 6 AM. We had come in at 1:30 PM. Totally understandable, but it seemed as though she was annoyed every time a person came in and wanted to order. She was very short and condescending. At one point, the phone was ringing and she told a customer she was going to stop answering the phone. It just seemed a little odd. I totally get it was probably pretty busy, but being in a tourist town and on a great, high-traffic corner, it just seemed as though she was going to be putting off a lot of returning business that could be returning throughout the summer. I also thought the store was a little dirty. I did notice that none of the deli workers were wearing gloves and handling all the food bare handed. Again, the food was great, but I think some better customer service and sanitary measures would go a long way.
