I called earlier in the day to check regarding children’s menu and a gluten free menu and was told not to worry as all food is made fresh and there was usually as a minimum a burger and fish a chips that fulfilled this. I enquired whether I had to make a booking for this afternoon and was told to just come down. How I wish We didn’t bother and chose somewhere Else. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived and for a fair duration after, and was told that even though they opened at 5 they wouldn’t take a food order until 6pm. Which is of course fine, so we had ample time to prepare our order and was ready to order as soon as they were ready to take it! We the proceeded to wait 55 minutes before even a peek of food turned up and only because we had asked how long it would be after 45 minutes and again after nearly an hour. When the food came it was luke warm at best, so cold for other diners that it got sent back for a quick dunk back in some oil. Fish was so bland and watery, and the peas came in their own little bowl of water which was nice, nearly as nice as the 4 hairs that we found across the meals, naturally half way through the meal but we darent send anything back with 4 starving children and a very strong Will to get the hell out of there. Please- save yourself the pain of this place and go somewhere Else.
What a place. food is 6 stars! best thai red curry on one visit and stilton and steak on another. well done to the team there.
The Black Horse is under new management and has been consistently good over the last couple of months I have been eating with friends and family, and also popping in for the odd drink. Last night 's Pie Night was just delicious. Jamie, head-chef had made individual 'proper ' pies that were simply exquisite. I had Steak Ale, washed down with a pint of delicious guest ale Seafarers . Others had Salmon Prawn which again was a fully encased pie, served with a seafood velouté, apparently divine. A couple of weeks ago we were at the Black Horse for Sunday Lunch after attending the Remembrance in Chelmsford. Again it was a very well organised affair, served with smiles and just the right degree of attentiveness, and a tasty crown of roast beef with all the trimmings was enjoyed at a very reasonable £13.50. Paul, Jamie, Kelly and Paula are a great team. Don 't hesitate, try it. You won 't be disappointed.
Visited today with our 5 year old, the service was fantastic and the food was possibly the best roast I’ve ever had. Definitely be visiting again, even gave our son sweets at the end for his good manners
Ignore every review on The Black Horse before October 2018. The pub is under new management and wow what a difference. Just had the best pub Sunday lunch for a very long time. Roast beef melts in your mouth and the marmalade glazed gammon an absolute delight. Followed up with as good a bread and butter pudding as Mum could make (SERIOUS!! then that’s going to be a winner! Very reasonable. Staff are very accommodating, friendly and there when you need them. The wine selection is superb and very reasonable. An extremely passable Pinot Noir for £21.50. The Black Horse has, without doubt, had its issues. But under the new management of Paul and Mel and with a brilliant, very keen young chef in Jamie, you are on a winner. The Black Horse is now a must go to venue in White Roding. Couldn’t fault it today!!
