The food here is average at best but the service was awful and it is enough to make me not ever want to go back. It started off rocky when we sat down and
Great dimsum placeLove the food hereHighly recommend reserving as it's hard to get a spot unless you're lucky or you're just two people.
We were heading to another nearby restaurant when my friend saw Haiyi. She said that a friend of hers had dined here recently and liked it. We arrived after 2 pm which is considered late for the dim sum crowd. Their hours are from 9 am until 3 pm and then from 5 pm until 10:30 pm. The servers were great in telling us that there was a last call before they closed at 3 pm.We ordered a rice shrimp noodle dish smothered in egg sauce. It tasted better than it looked. The shrimp were a decent size. Other dishes we had were eggplant stuffed with shrimp (mediocre tasting); hai gow (mainly shrimp); steamed pork ribs (tasteless); sticky rice steamed in leaf (everyone's favourite dish); pork turnovers (a bit more crust than filling with filling being a bit salty) and another steamed dumpling dish with assorted bits of meat (tasted fine). The place is more in the neighbourhood area of Main Street. The restaurant has a nice décor and isn't too big. There's parking located just outside in a small plaza. The lot fits only about 8 cars and it's a tight squeeze. If you don't want to get your car dented or scratched, park elsewhere on the side streets or on Main Street. Service was average. We had to flag down the server a few times.
This restaurant is located in East Vancouver between 32nd and 33rd Avenue on Main Street. We arrived around 11:45 AM and the restaurant was less than ¼ full in this 100 plus seat restaurant. When we left about an hour later the restaurant was more than ½ full. The 3 of us ordered the following:• Scallops and shrimp dumplings (3 for $5.99) – above average in taste• Steamed spareribs with taro root ($5.45) - above average in taste• Eggplant with fish paste (3 pieces for $5.45) – bland tasting and didn’t care for the dish• Rice rolls with 3 kinds of mushrooms ($5.99); vegetarian option – average tasting• E-fu noodles with mushrooms (wheat flour egg noodles - $16.80); vegetarian option ordered without oyster sauce – average tasting, overpriced• Deep fried tofu ($8.99); vegetarian option – different and tasted okayThe total bill was $48.70 before the tip. This price included a 10% discount for the small, medium and large dim dishes. That is, dishes not identified as “small, medium or large” do not qualify for the discount. I don’t recall if the 10% discount was a times sensitive offer (possibly before noon only). The scallops and shrimp dumplings dish was probably the best of the 6 dishes we ordered. Not far behind was the steamed spareribs dish. Just as an aside, the menu said steamed spareribs with pumpkin but the dish came with cubed taro and no pumpkin. The soft tofu was coated with what looked like panko bread crumbs and deep fried adding a bit of texture. The tofu dish was a fair size but with the commensurate pricing.Ratings breakdown:• Quality and taste – 3 out of 5 rating• Pricing – 3 out of 5• Service – 3.25 out of 5I would rate the restaurant experience as average - 3 out of 5 for the quality of food, portion size and taste.Notes & Tips:• Limited vegetarian options• Complimentary tea• There is a private function room that has 1 table that seats 10• There are maybe 10-12 spots in the very small lot plus street parking if you can find any• Accepts credit cards with minimum order• Separate men’s and women’s washrooms with wheelchair access but maybe difficult to access because the washrooms are small and because of the narrow aisle way filled with spare round table extensions.• About ½ block South and on the other side is the Vietnamese restaurant Bon Café. Across the street from Haiyi are 2 other restaurants that I have also eaten at – Au Petit Café, another Vietnamese restaurant and Long’s noodle house specializing in Northern Chinese dishes. See my reviews for all 3 restaurants.
