Four of us visited June 22 2017... the menu is quite flamboyant and the explanation of the menu by our waiter was we thought re assuring but turned out to be totally misleading.Beef Carpaccio was described as being a substantial portion turned out to be about 4" x 4" single slice of beef swamped in dressings with a little lettuce and nothing else. $ 15Other meals were Chicken Liver tart ( liquidised pate), tuna tostada ( raw tuna ) Harrisa lamb ( tasted like processed meat & gritty. All had very odd taste and inedible. No bread or side salad. Sent everything back. Got a refund but only after an unpleasant argument with the waiter and manager / owner? If you are hungry go elsewhere. Plenty of other places to eat in the area. Hopefully they will give a more accurate explanation of the menu. Gin'ger....fizzy ginger pop smelt weird, egg white on the top. Very smallDraft beer....very odd...Sage advice...mostly ice....$ 13Overall very disappointed! Even with refund ended up paying $60 for four drinks and one meal (inedible) not eaten.Extremely unhappy!
My brother and I go here every Sunday for a "long brunch." Service is always amazing, beer is always cold, and menu is always interesting.Nice to get out of the CBD for a second and unwind on the other side of the bridge. Merchants is intimate and they do everything with an attention to detail that is beautiful to find. Craft beer is always on point too. These lads usually have something interesting in the cold case. Drank my fair share of Jerkface 9000 when it was in season. Currently overseas, and desperately missing my weekly Merchants visits.
This is a very casual place with a great view of all the activity on Commercial Drive. Wine list is a bit sparse. No glasses of decent Reisling, Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc. The cheese plate and Dick tostadas are good. Prices are high but nice atmosphere and friendly service.
Walked by after stopping for a bottle of wine to take to my hotel room, but the bar and bistro-style tables an the lighting was so inviting, I marched right in and sat at the bar. The owner was welcoming and attentive and the atmosphere was great. Happy hour oysters were fantastic and served with a good mignonette (@ a buck a shuck) and the $5 (yep-not kidding) happy hour Chenin Blanc were a great combo. Also ordered one of the BEST, most flavourful root salads on the planet. It was artfully presented in a generous haystack of little matchsticks of roots and veggies in a citrus-y vinaigrette. Wow. Great food, great atmosphere, great service, great prices.
