We came here for lunch after realizing that our other two (usual, go-to, very reliable and delicious) options were closed for the holidays.
First off, note that it is now called Zipang Provisions and is at 3068 Main (between 14th
Used to be edible but now its horrid. Went on a Sunday and all the food had been prepared days before and microwaved or left out. The agadashi tofu was covered in a condom like sheath of goo. We later realized it had been cooked days before, left to marinate in tempura sauce and then re-served. The 3 dollar nigiri were inferior cuts of fish, including hamachi that looked and smelled like roadkill. Tuna tataki was rancid. The server couldn't even make eye contact he was so ashamed. Avoid like the worm laced rotting fish plague that it is. There are dozens of decent priced, better quality options within a few blocks.
The decor of the restaurant has been updated, but the facade of the restaurant and front entrance still make it look like a sports bar. I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the food. The Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet) is really tasty and the sushi/sashimi as well as curries (Beef/Pork) are authentically Japanese (as are many of the staff.) Desserts are just average, but you have Lucky Donuts and Kul Ice cream nearby. Good luck and enjoy.
