The waiters hang around which is quite annoying They walk back and forth and hang over you while you eat. The liquor isn't good so don't order that. Wine looks less then 5 oz and doesn't test that great. The soup is so small but it comes in a fancy dish. You're lucky if you get 5 spoonfuls for the cost. I am going to give it a try again otherwise I am going to switch to another restaurant
Any Winnipegger who has grew up at the Shanghai and Nanking, then later at Shang Bo as an adult will tell you that the food at Cynthia's is absolutely awful. What the dishes make up in presentation they lose in actual flavour. This was my first North American Chinese food experience in Toronto and I can tell you that if this is what people here consider good Chinese food, it will be my last. The lemon chicken, although the portion was nice, had absolutely no taste. The miniscule $5.45 wonton soup was a disaster. I won't even begin to tell you about the chicken fried rice. The only positive out if this experience was the BBQ pork. It wasn't too bad.
The beef and broccoli is exactly what I wanted. Tender meat, crispy broccoli and not swimming in sauce. The har gaw was so good we had an extra order of it at the end of our meal. I'd give 5 stars but the menu is a bit more pricy than what I was expecting.
I have been going to Cynthia's for years. I have also been to the Newmarket location several times. It is worth the drive. Both locations have great food and exceptional service. We always have the won ton soup. It is very flavourful and always served piping hot. Our usual order is the Cantonese Chow Mein, Chicken Sugai (this used to be on the menu, but they removed it. If you request it, they will still make it for you), and vegetable fried rice. The food is simple but tasty and consistent. I have never had a bad meal here. We tried to find a better chinese restaurant in the area and sampled quite a few, but nothing measured up. We came back to Cynthia's and have decided it will be our regular spot from now on. Why try to fix something that's not broken?
With so many great authentic Chinese restaurants nearby, this restaurant may sometimes be overlooked. That is unfortunate because the food is high quality and the service is very good. The staff even wear costumes. It essentially serves the somewhat Cantonesey old fashion Canadian Chinese food that was once more common three decades ago. Food was enjoyable and so was the atmosphere. For what it is, it deserves at least 4 stars.
