Sudest 1401 - VENEZIA

We just had lunch in a very nice restaurant in the backyard of a Palazzo. Great food for normal prices. Recommendable. Make a reservation because many local people come for lunch.

If you are looking to do something a little different and of the beaten path literally, try this restaurant. We wandered past it one day back to our hotel and booked a reservation for same night. Fish was amazing and fresh with the staff bringing fish before cooking to your table. The middle Eastern dishes were outstanding and the fish seemed to be in classic Italian style. Wine list was first rate with some excellent Italian bianco varieties. Would go again and highly recommend it. Teenage kids good but younger probably not.

You can enter Sudest 1401 through a dark back alley off the Zattere, where you would not expect to find any place to eat, let alone a hidden garden and a small but elegant cafe. The food was unusual in a city where conventional dishes dominate. I had a light supper of Burek spinach in phylo dough with yoghurt and delicious calimari stuffed with bread crumbs and pine nuts, along with a glass of Moro Polo red. The price was modest but above all the food was satisfying.
