I can't speak to the food. The arrival experience was so off-putting that we left before we ordered. We arrived to a sign outside saying don't enter the front doors until you check in to a side window of glass. A girl slid the side window open (like a cheesy old doctor reception room and asked about our reservation. Then they came around and let us in the front door. Seated us at a tiny two top on the middle of a little room. The waiter came out and told us that they were out of two of the three appetizers. Only had one of the two salad choices (this was before 6 pm So we picked up and moved on to a lovely restaurant up the road
It was our first night in Hawaii and we'd been travelling from New Zealand for 19 hours. We needed food. We needed beer. This place was a GREAT choice and the best and most relaxed place we went to in Volcano. Very seriously: if you want a meal in the evening in Volcano that is down to earth, friendly, yummy, and worth the money, this is the place. Other places exist, but they are NOT as good. Trust me on this. Watch out for their opening hours, they're closed some nights and then your options in Volcano very much, much smaller.
Ordered a hot chocolate and got watery Swiss miss. I'm not picky, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a café to provide at least medium quality hot chocolate. If you mix cocoa powder, sugar and a bit of water into a paste and then mix it with hot milk, that's a place to start. Also, melting baker's chocolate into hot milk is great. Just a place to start!
