Top Line: Hit up Lula Jane's for a slice of their buttermilk pie and a cuppa Joe for breakfast. Interior of the high ceiling room is bright, open, sort of industrial looking but not in an intimidating way. Wares presented tastefully. Counter staff is exemplary in being friendly welcoming. Delightful service!! Price for very high quality vittles was reasonable, well under a fiver. The cup of Columbian coffee was richly flavored, stiff strong. Just the jump start my morning needed. Their buttermilk pie amazed me with its delicate texture and subtle flavor. This was a stark contrast to the sturdy piece of buttermilk pie I had at Jake's, which had dense filling creme brulee like top crust (not necessarily bad things, just different). Lula Jane's buttermilk pie had a finer flakier crust. The outer rim was quite crunchy. Not dry, over-baked hard, but more like a caramelized sugar crust kinda crunch. The pie filling intrigued me by being smooth, but with a hint of graininess. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say thickening wasn't standard flour. Maybe tapioca flour or other some such instead. This gave the filling a very fine granular nearly crumb-like density, like it was wishing to become a blondie bar. But that filling was *light*, nearly fluffy in body. How do you make a filling that is both substantial and light at the same time? I don't know, but the bakers at Lula Jane's do and they ain't tellin'. And speaking of blondie bars, the flavor of the buttermilk pie filling kinda reminded me of that flavor. It had sweet (without being cloyingly sweet) egg custard vanilla tones, but with a very soft shading of almondine. A flavor both soft distinct enough to keep the pie interesting without overwhelming your taste buds. Final note is on the top crusting of the pie filling. While the buttermilk pie at Jake's had a sturdy plating of caramelized sugar crumbs, the pie at Lula Jane's had a delicate ephemeral layer of tawny gold baked crust floating over the filling. More blondie bar aspirations? Perhaps. So mark Lula Jane's on your Waco map as the place to get wonderolicious breakfast goodies from just the nicest folks at prices even grandma would like.
First off, I can 't say enough about the hospitality of the owner. The minute I walked in Nancy said hello even though she was sitting at a back table. When I mentioned I had a food blog and that I flew in from Seattle to visit Waco and some of the premier bakeries there, she was kind enough to offer me her house specialty which was a chocolate chip cookie. Absolutely to die for, (still won 't share the secret, Nance? as well as her other cookies and cakes. She actually took the time to talk to me for about a half an hour and I had an absolutely delightful time. Her place is inviting and I believe she has a garage door that opens up in nice weather. I was there during a thunderstorm but no matter. The atmosphere was bright and cozy and if you 've never been here, you can tell she and her employees care about the quality of every item they bake. Lula Jane 's is definitely worth a go in !!!
Modern renovation with an added glass wall to keep in the a.c. or sit outside along the roadway. They have a garden just outside of the restaurant. Seemed like the restaurant specializes in baked pies, cookies and breads. Had the Baked Oatmeal with Blueberries which was pretty good if you are into oatmeal. Breakfast Pie with Sausage, Eggs and cheese was pretty delicious that kind of resembled a quiche. Self serve honor system with coffee and water which is located on a table at the end of the cash register. Restaurant has a good vibe and nice and relaxing. Was very busy but still relaxing. Loved the bacon cheddar cheese scones and the baked goods. Look forward to going back again
This place is amazing! If you're a visitor in the Waco, Texas area; you'll be making a great choice if you eat here. They have sweet and savory crepes and awesome cool Rice bowls. My husband and I shared a savory crepe with a ton of veggies in it. This crepe was so full, it was on a little cone shape cup and breaking open as we ate it. But I'm saying all of that in a good way! It was so tasty and wonderfully hand made fresh! We also ordered a Salmon rice bowl. It was amazing with soy and Terriaki sauces! We had them heat up the salmon and there was a large amount of fresh vegetables and the tastes of the hot and cold together was superb! We will definitely be going to Lula Janes again next time we visit Waco! By the way, they will make children's crepes as well! Our granddaughter got to have her own cheese quesadilla and she was thrilled! Oh... the desserts looked amazingly delicious, but we were too full to have any at this visit! We will have to save room next time!
We also couldn't resist trying the Bread Pudding, which was incredibly tasty, made with pecans and drizzled with vanilla syrup. It had a great texture and wonderful flavor. Later, we took some blueberry pie to go, and it did not disappoint; it was flavorful, and the crust was excellent as well. Discovering this hidden gem felt like a home run! The staff were very friendly and seemed to know many of the regulars. I would definitely return to this wonderful restaurant!
