The steak sandwich is no longer really a sandwich. It began in this way, but a long time ago Al served such a big steak that it was easier to eat from himself than between the slices of bread to sandwich. You still get the grilled sourdough bread, and each table has a glass of Jif peanut butter and orange jam to enjoy with it.
As you said, what you see is what you get. A Michelin-rated restaurant is not; but that is good. Really good. We left more than satisfied after we wolfed burgers, pasta and beer and tipped our server a little extra for their friendliness and for the wine-snobs that they snooze more than likely.
Al the Wop’s can’t be famous for its cooktop steaks. Or it's glasses from Safeway-Bought Jif. There must be something more that people draw to this remote delta dive.
New owners are busy scrubbing, preparing to re-open in mid-February (2021). They promise to keep it “exactly as it was before, but cleaner”. Can’t wait to go back.
