I had the lamb vindaloo which is normally a very hot and spicy dish. The tomato sauce had a hint of vinegar which is the way it 's supposed to be. Lamb was excellent but not spicy hot enough. The menu said all dishes were made medium so I was forewarned. I should have ordered hot! The white basmati rice had a nice nutty flavor as it was cooked with cloves. The garlic naan was good not great and the yogurt sauce, Raita, was boring. I will go back as it has good potential.
I have to say, less than impressed, after the high scoring on other sites. The atmosphere A, the service A, the food C not very flavorful, no heat, felt less than authentic) being charged hidden fees for items we did not request/ were not informed of C- major downgrade). Cons: price; food quality/ flavor We were charged to split an entree and charged for double rice, even though we did not ask for it, were not informed of it, and didn't eat most of it because I had order an appetizer as my main. I even stated that during order but instead the appetizer was brought very early, so my hubby and I shared it rather than eating separately or waiting for mine to get cold before his Butter chicken 21.50) can out. The Butter chicken was good Chicken tikka entree size) $14.50- was not prepared in the traditional way, it did not seem. The meat wasnt very flavorful, lacking the infused, cooked-in flavor expected if the long, slow preparation method had been used. Mango chutney tiny, tiny finger bowl) 3.95. we weren't informed of the extra charges when we inquired if we could have some for our naan) Maybe I just am used to a higher standard of Indian cuisine, being spoiled by my super authentic, spicy dishes from a place in my hometown, but I love trying Indian out and about... Have to say, this was disappointed in both the food and the extra charges, thus a poor rating allotted. Pros: the garlic naan was tasty. The ambience was warm and welcoming, with red walls, red booths to match and a toasty fire near the entrance. Service was prompt, they brought a pitcher of water for the table, which I loved, and checked on during the meal though we waited 10 min for the check before realizing you go up to the host to pay; not customary in the US at a nicer sit-down restaurant, so I want used to it).
Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Goat Nawabi is our favorite. Malai Kofta is fantastic too cottage cheese and potato dumplings reminiscent of gnocchi. I only have 2 complaints: 1. They put almost no veggies in their dishes so you have to order an entire main off of the vegetarian menu to get any vegetables. 2. They don't have brown rice. Which I think is so much better than brown rice!
Was surprised by the quality of Indian food in Lake Wanaka. Excellent food, good ambience. amazing hospitality. Owner was there and took personal care!
