A great afternoon a relaxed atmosphere good selection of beers, wines and good food... sky sports as well for the football.
I visit the Pig Whistle every year during the Wimbledon tennis fortnight for evening meals and a few beers 2 visits this year. Food is always good and the portions are substantial. Usually has a very lively but relaxed atmosphere, spilling into the beer garden and seating area outside at the front when in warm weather. Relaxing lounging area and tabled area inside. Staff are very friendly and welcoming and will readily engage in banter service is prompt and with a smile. I’d be a regular if not for the distance between the Pig and my home cos no way am I walking 500 miles for a pint, I do proclaim!
I came here with a few friends for a quiet reunion drink one Friday evening. We had a friend visiting from abroad, we were in the neighborhood and liked the look of The Pig and Whistle. It's laid out nicely, with a good amount of seating and a decent selection of beers and spirits on offer as well. Staff were also friendly enough. Before long, we were all enjoying a beer and catching up with each other. My big issue was when I went up to get a few drinks a couple of hours in. We weren't going to be staying out much longer so I thought I'd switch to spirits. I ordered a double whisky for myself (Talisker, neat), a G&T (double Bombay sapphire) and a pint of ale. This came to £27.30. I must not have heard the bar lady at the time or I would have questioned this, but I was naturally shocked when I saw this on my receipts later on. I've been to pubs in Central London where I could have gotten all of the above for considerably less. I know that Youngs pubs are often a bit pricier but I thought that was pushing it. I don't know if the bar staff made a mistake or if it really is that pricey, but I certainly was not expecting that from a local pub on the outskirts of Wimbledon. I'd be happy to discuss this with a manager or member of staff from the pub, but as it stands I'm still left with a very bitter aftertaste and will not be returning.
Made my way from Balham, ordered drinks, manager wanted credit card (I will not leave my credit card with ANYONE EVER) offered nationally accepted photo ID driving licence to leave behind bar, but they will not accept this but will accept a stolen/found credit card! WTF!! Refused to eat here until they adopt a 21st century security policy. On the plus side on our way back to Earlsfield Station we stopped at The Wandle (other end of Penrith road) excellent food friendly staff, a must, see my review.
