Terrible frankfurters, soup, schnitzel and hamburger. The strudel was okay. Service was okay and atmosphere welcoming. But nothing overcomes the terrible dishes.
After a long day of hiking around the Alps and exploring the ice caves, we were ready for some food. We are still leery to eat at a place where there's no other competition in the area--such as Dr. Oedl Schutzhause, on top of a mountain--but throughout our travels in Europe, this isn't a common European practice. We found the place to be reasonably-priced for the meal we received. This place gets busy mid-day, say late lunch time (14h), so be prepared. We had to sit inside due to some off-and-on sprinkles. I had the Austrian mac-and-cheese, which really was two meals, and tasted good. My friend had the goulash soup, which was very tasty. We had a beer each (hey, in Germany and Austria, beer is literally cheaper than water) and the bill came out to 45 EUR. The service was friendly...the staff wears traditional Austrian garb while they work to add to the old-world charm this schnitzel house on top of the Alps naturally gives off.If you want a cool and unique place to have a meal, this is it. You'll get plenty of food and the price is right.
The hot chocolate was the best! This is a perfect rest after your ice cave hike. We had the schnitzel and several other dishes. It was all very good. I was so thankful to have a break in a beautiful setting.
My partner and I had just finished our visit to the Eisriesen Caves and were cold...it was a very rainy Austrian day (June 2016). We were hiking down to the gondola from the cave entrance and passed by the Dr. Oedl-Schutzhaus. We were going to just head down but the nicest server noted that they had a nice Kachelofen (wood stove) going inside so we decided to go in...very pretty inside and just the nicest folks! It is a very typical Alpine mountain restaurant...simple yet hearty food and the prices were fair. I had the Gulaschsuppe with two Wurstl (sausages...like American hotdogs only better) and my partner had the tomato soup and a cappuccino. She said it was the best cappuccino she had on our entire 4 week trip! The service was quite friendly and efficient...which can be unusual for a restaurant where they have a somewhat captive audience. The only negative thing...and I can't be 100% sure it was here...but later that day I came down with food poisoning...may have been the Wurstl since my partner and I had the exact same dinner that night in Salzburg and she did not become sick. Unfortunately it was the last week of our vacation and it set me back at least 48 hrs...sad since it was such a great place!
