In the end, the only vegan option available was a Thai fried rice without egg, vegetables, and soy sauce. It was a bit bland, with only a few veggies and a salty soy sauce. To add to my disappointment, they offered cappuccino but didn't have any plant-based milk alternatives. Overall, my experience at Global Thai was underwhelming due to the limited vegan options and lack of transparency regarding ingredients.
I was unsure of what kind of food I would find in Whakatane when I visited for work, but I was hopeful that a Thai restaurant would be able to accommodate my vegan diet. And indeed, they did. The staff were extremely helpful and made sure to double-check everything for me. Almost every item on the menu could be made vegan, and they were more than happy to remove the fish sauce as well. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of tofu in my meal, as they were quite generous with it. With delicious food and fantastic staff, I will definitely be returning the next time I am in Whakatane.
I have eaten in global thai today when I was in whakatane for work, and that was the only restaurant there with a happycow mention. the lunch menu looked initially completely vegetarian friendly, as all sweet dishes should be finished by a selection of several types of meat or tofu. When I was asked for vegan dressing, I was informed that most of the sauces used could contain milk, as milk content was not mentioned on the packings of the sauces, after the waitress. when I asked about the sauce of the cook, she said that he had this soaked together by mixing several of the unspecified sauces. it also mentioned that most of the dishes contained oyster sauce, even though it was not specified as such on the menu. according to her, the only possibility was to have a vegan menu, the egg from Thai fried rice with ice cream, vegetables and soy sauce to eave. that was the option that I chose: a fairly fried rice with some breams, some cauliflower and a few strips carrot and a salty soy sauce. to cover my disappointment: they offered cappuccino, but had no soy or other plant milk for it. updated from previous review on 2017-03-29
I was not sure what I would find eating when I went to whakatane to work, but hoped that a Thai place could feed a vegan. that could. the staff was incredibly helpful and checked everything. almost any option on the menu could be made vegan and they were in order to also take the fish sauce. I've never had so much tofu in my evening meal, so they were very generous with him what I liked. good eating and excellent staff means that I will be back next time in whakatane.
