The breakfast special, which is served all day, has six--count them-- six--slices of terrific bacon, for example. But what really sets J and H apart is the opportunity to see and feel what family means. John and Helen and their two sons radiate family unity and pride as they work together in their family business and they have done so for years and years and years.
This is a very friendly place! It's a family business, and everything on the menu is home made and fresh. They serve both Greek food and standard fare such as burgers and breakfast. I had the souvlaki on a pita special, with a Greek salad and french fries. I usually don't order souvalki because there never is enough meat, but this had a huge hunk of ground meat on a skewer - sort of an oval hamburger. There was a lot of meat, and the sauce and the pita were also good. I was surprised that fries were served instead of rice, but what fries! They were big, homemade, crispy and delicious! The decor is very simple, almost Spartan (Hey, it's a Greek restaurant, right? They hold the title on Spartan!) but no one goes there for the decor. They go here for the food and the service. They've been in operation for 40 years now, and if they keep it up, they'll be around for 40 more!
Every time I visit Winnipeg I come here for breakfast just to get Johnny's special with the big wall of bacon on my plate. The bacon is cut thick & specially smoked for their place. I'm a fairly big eater but there's always a couple or so potatoes still left on my plate when I'm done and I usually skip my lunch those days. Very friendly & down to earth atmosphere and they throw lots of coffee at you.
The J&H is under new ownership and the couple who have taken the reins are wonderful and engaging. Sadly though the food fell 'flat' for our breakfast. The Greek omelet was a disappointment. I like my omelets big, piled up mass of 'stuff' with the fixin's oozing out when you cut through. Today's was flat and really lacked seasoning. You get a healthy portion of home fries but they too really lacked any flavour. On a good note they were light but without the flavour, that didn't matter. The daily breakfast special is a great deal. The 6 slices of bacon is great but like the omelet meal, the homes fries lacked flavour. The eggs easy over were 'okay', but a bit greasy and like the omelet, flat, if that makes any sense.Hopefully things will pick up with some experience in the 'trenches'.
Glad we stopped.good food-gyros- and great service. would definatley stop again. family small town atmosphere.
