Rakan House - Winnipeg

Delicious Malaysian and Thai food! A nice change of pace from the standard fare. <br/ <br/ Starter of Thai Barbecue Pork Toro was a generous portion of flavourful and mildly spicy curry. Tender and moist meat. <br/ <br/ Coconut Seafood Fried Rice was unique with lots of tasty seafood bits (shrimp and calamari) hidden in the rice and rich sauce. <br/ <br/ Stir-fried Beef with Broccoli was garlicy with tender beef and a generous amount of broccoli.

My husband was born in Malaysia. He can take the Winnipeg cold like a champ but he very much misses his Malaysian food. We were therefore elated to discover an actual Malaysian restaurant in Winnipeg. And it’s actually pretty darn good!<br/ <br/ We’ve ordered twice the mee goreng is excellent we asked for it spicy and the heat was just right. Definitely a winner and a must try. <br/ The chicken rice is really good too (the only drawback was the chilli sauce accompaniment it would have been much better off made fresh). The hor fun is flavourful but my husband wished the noodles were charred. The smokiness of charred noodles is what really makes a hor fun amazing and unfortunately in both cases the noodles were pale.<br/ <br/ It’s hard for a restaurant with so many options to be great at every dish but I think that Rakan House has done a really good job so far with some tweaks it could be excellent. We’ll definitely be back to cure that Malaysian craving.<br/

Came across Rakan House on Skipthedishes when I was deciding on what to order for lunch and was delighted by the fact that they specialized in Malaysian and Thai Cuisine and they also have a few Vietnamese dishes pho). Winnipeg doesn't really have any Malaysian restaurants so I was excited to find out that we now did!<br/ <br/ I decided to order The Hainanese Free Range Chicken 1/2 of a whole chicken for $14.99), which comes with ginger sauce and chili sauce for dipping. As it didn't mention if it came with rice or not, I ended up also ordering Hainanese style rice for $2.50. Other rice options they offer include your regular steamed rice, coconut rice and ginger rice, which were at the same cost.<br/ <br/ I also decided to get an appetizer and went with the stir fried turnip cake $7.99), but unfortunately my order was screwed up and ended up receiving Thai prawn cakes $8.50) instead. The restaurant was apologetic towards the mistake and offered to give credit for it. I let it go this time as the food was still good.<br/ <br/ The Hainanese chicken was really good as well as the rice, which was really fragrant and flavourful. I would definitely get it again if I have the cravings for it. The prawn cakes comes in three) was also delicious, made of prawns, coriander, grated ginger, lime and sliced onion.<br/ <br/ They also have other popular Malaysian dishes such as gado gado, bak kut the, mee goreng, fried hokkien mee, nasi goreng, laksa, char kuey teow and at lunch time they offer some other dishes that are available for dine in only and not on Skipthedishes, such as nasi lemak.<br/ <br/ Overall, they're a lovely addition to Winnipeg's restaurants and I hope to see more restaurants of different cuisines pop into our city.
