The owners, Paul and Elena our the most welcoming, nice people and their daughter who tends bar was delightful. The food is outstanding Paul and I think his name is Chuck are the chefs and smoking is their passion. Although I did not have a smoked dish, I did have the tenderloins on crostini with a mushroom Parmesan cream sauce. My partner was in the mood for hamburger and that's what he ordered. He couldn't say enough about it. People next to us were raving about the mac cheese topped with smoked brisket , the smoked ribs and smoked wings. If you're up here in the Northwoods, you have to make a point to have a meal here you will not be disappointed
This is an awesome backwoods lodge. Being from CA I have never been anywhere like this. Dan was great to talk to. We could have stayed all night hanging out and drinking with him. We were a large party and we placed our order and the food came out quickly. Fish, chicken, shrimp, potato salad, beans, biscuits, fries, bread... it was all really good. I didn't have higher expectations when we came in but it turned out to be excellent. Plenty of ketchup and tartar sauce to go around also. I went in the summer and the weather was hot but in the winter I can only imagine the place to be crazy. Thanks Dan!
We visited Pope 's for the first time two weeks ago. My kids LOVED the candy and toy grab games so much it was one of only two places they wanted to go back to when we came back this weekend. And to visit with Basil the dog. With kids it is quiet the jaunt (on a very cold day from St. Germain, so it says a lot on their desire to return. The kids were able to sit at the bar (it 's a deal breaker for our family , money was readily exchanged for quarters (over and over again , and the bartender brought us lunch sacks for each of the kids to take home their goods. After reading all the negative reviews, I could reflect and might have caught a glimmer of why others might view the bar staff/owners as being brisk and disengaged. But there was nothing that was off putting or would deter us from visiting again. We enjoyed exceptional ****** Mary 's with outstanding pickled string beans, hot adult beverages, and good soup. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the lodge (just wish the fireplace was always roaring-it is so nice they have one! . I have no doubt the kids will continue to request this as a stop and we will oblige.
It's a lodgey bar in the woods with lots of mounted wild animals and classic Northwoods decor. A snowmobile trail runs right to it in the winter, making it a popular place to stop for a shot of jamo or one of the many hot chocolate liquor drinks on the menu, all of which are excellent! (Yes I tried them all). A warm fireplace, polished wood bar, Grandpa style lounge chair with a cuddly dog sitting on it, and a pool table round out the Up North ambiance. We sat at the bar and had friendly convo with the owner, and when we had to be on our way he helped us out with trail directions. All in all, it was another enjoyable stop in the wintry Wisconsin woods.
If you have kids, don't bother going. Dan, the owner who was working the bar was rude to our kids. Wouldn't let them play pool because he was worried about them breaking the light. He didn't even say anything to them or us. He just walked over, took the balls from the table that they were playing with and walked away. I asked him if they could play and I said I would pay for the light if they broke it and he just smirked and walked away. What a jerk. Kids were 9 and 7, well behaved and there was only about 4 people in there sitting at the bar. Kids played pool at the last four bars but I guess not here. Would probably be a great spot with new owners. Find any other spot if you have kids because this place sucks.
