Firstly no highchairs, back to the car to get prams we had two toddlers. Warmish pies, cold coffee and stale honey logs. Not good taking interstate visitors to what was once one of our favs. Previous visits we also had warm pies and warm/cool coffees. Prob give it a miss next time. Very disappointing
I always thought that a chocolate éclair was made from choux pastry and covered in proper chocolate. The one I have just purchased (and eaten) was a tad tough and probably a bready dough, filled with a poor tasting cream and a thin reddish jam and the topping was chocolate icing. I might have known !! More fool me for buying it. I did ask the girl if it was a "proper" éclair, but as it was being sold as such who was I to quibble ! I live and learn - if you want a decent chocolate éclair, then make it yourself which I will do in the future. As it was, I needed a really sharp knife to cut through it for me and him. Come on Lovells - raise your game and made some real choux pastry !
This bakery has very little in the way of sandwiches and cakes. The selection is sparse and makes me wonder why they are open. What they do sell is average. Try the bakery up the road. Lobethal Bakery in Woodside is awesome.
I visited with my 5 year old granddaughter on 12 Feb 2017 in the afternoon, after a bike ride. The chocolate drink and apple-custard tart were acceptable. However the girl serving was surly, uncommunicative (not even a grunt) and clearly made her irritation at being interrupted apparent. And then proceeded to take our money with no eye contact let alone a "Thankyou".Having fair quality food is one thing but Lovell's need to address the poor quality of service. This was not a "one off" but consistent with the pattern reported on other review sites and my own experience. Wake up Lovell's! Select and train your staff to provide a positive, welcoming environment. In the meantime, I suggest the reader visit one of the other fine coffee and cake shops in Woodside unless you want a cheap take away likely to reflect the quality of service you will receive.
We have visited this bakery many times on drives through the Adelaide Hills, seeking takeaways, and found that it offers consistently good quality buns and pasties. The rustic charm of the large shop and cafe adds to the sense of aauthenticity: this is a good old fashioned bakery with good food at low prices.
