Large small restaurant in the Middle East in Wuppertal. Karawane offers good Arabic food and German beer that is the perfect combination!
This place was a pleasant surprise! I am picky about Arabic food and this was some of the best I have had after living in Western Europe for more than a year now. The food was made to order with fresh ingredients. In fact, you...could taste the love in this food. The atmosphere was lovely. Very cozy and inviting! A great place to bring your family or a date. This all being said, it took quite some time to get our food. (This usually wouldn't be an issue, but we were there on a week night and needed to get up early in the morning. Also, good food takes time so I immediately was able to overlook the wait once our food arrived. Lastly, the drink menu left something to be desired. specifically, the beer menu was terrible. This is not acceptable in Germany, there are so many great options to choose from. Overall, I highly recommend this place.
At this point, there have been gastronomy for over 50 years. 40 to 50 years ago, Manfred Lemm ran an art venue where many later artists/small artists had their first stage appearances. Later an Arab restaurant opened there. At that time very exotic and certainly at that time with a manageable feed. Although we know the restaurant from passing for decades, the Arab restaurant has never attracted us because of its external appearance. A cellar sorry pub, visually little convincing. However, as we occasionally like to eat Arabic, and the number of Arab restaurants in the city at Wupper is very manageable and you don't always want to go to Cologne or Düsseldorf for dinner, we then reserved a table in the caravan. Entered, a few steps down, around 19:00 the restaurant was then quite filled. We had reserved, the friendly service staff led us to the table. My first impression: The furniture was probably from the time when the relevant artist scene was hosted here 40 or 50 years ago. At the time, young artists were represented here, some of which are today known TV actors. Also already standing actors from the playhouse, which had its place 25 meters vis a vis of the caravan. Not only the same furniture, but also the same narrowness, because of the low table distances. The Arabic flair convey numerous colorful lamps that now shine from the ceiling. Where these more spread a marginal light. Or plainly, it's **** dark in the craw. A real restaurant feeling well-being didn't get involved with me. Hasimaus found it interesting how she expressed it diplomatically. The young friendly waiter brought the cards and asked for the drinks. For Hasimausi the No name Riesling from the map, for me a Krombacher Pils. Allah had probably not allowed the sale of Kölsch. First, the readability of the map was revealed as a problem. However, as I have a mini LED lamp at the keychain, the problem was quickly solved, but solved head shakes with Hasimausi. The map presents what is more or less served in all Arab restaurants and I think that is quite positive. First of all, of course, Mezze, so the numerous small appetizers Dips etc., which are ordered as 10 or 20 dishes. When the quality is right and the bread is warm and tasty, Mezze is a wonderful entry into the Arabic cuisine. Yes if ! The main dishes usually dominate in Arabic restaurants, lamb, poultry and seafood. Beef in a rather small selection and of course nothing from unclean pig. Whoever consumes this hacks Allah either the hand or he never comes into paradise with the numerous virgins. We ordered 10 appetizers for together around 20 euros. The service served them quickly and placed them on the table. Unfortunately without announcement what is in the peel. I can't remember it completely, but it just belongs to the ritual. Not here. Add a lot of warm, very thin bread. To the Mezze appetizers: That much of it is vegetarian is normal. But as here almost 100% all vegetarian nööö I didn't like it. I missed the little shrimps, I missed the little lamb balls. Why so I asked myself, was Allah not happy to me? The one or other dip, the one or other sesame paste was on average okay, but in total no convincing Arab appetizers parade. Only convincing that really good bread. We waited for the main courts. In the meantime, the utilisation of the restaurant was almost 100%. At the side table, an unfamiliar politician from the federal capital had now taken up an annex. Weeks later he had to go to the Corona quarantine, but I didn't know that in February. I don't know. The main dishes were served. For Hasimausi Farisije narrow beef. As a supplement, marons, walnuts, sauce from pomegranate and rice. What was not convincing at all was the optics. Everything was on the plate. If you use the ancient spell here: The eye eats with , the eye would rather be shy. Hasimausi explicitly praised the quality of the sworn beef. Now to my shrimps. Even here the optics are not convincing, actually insufficient. You had thrown about 15!!! amazing little shrimps in the card called giant shrimps on the plate. One got the impression that the chef would have given the order today, we don't care about the presentation. But not enough. The shrimps were neutral in taste, actually without taste. What was noticed was the number of shrimps. How to bring about 15 shrimps to the plate at a price of around 20 euros. Each average restaurant serves for this price a maximum of 4 or 5 giant cigarettes, but certainly not 15 even if they were small. Potato corners were announced. Served were soft roast potatoes. Conclusion: Hasimausi was satisfied with your food with the exception of optics, and I dominated the dissatisfaction in the range of 90%. In view of this culinarically sloping performance, the relatively high noise scene, a narrow seating and a limit-value illumination, we dispensed with a dessert, as well as espresso and digestif. Only the memory of the old artist's pub and, above all, the evenings and nights you spent here as a very young adult and then stood nervously and with sweating hands on the small stage, kept me in a mood. ps A high praise however on the fleeting, attentive friendly service.
