On entry it again seemed predominantly like a drinking establishment, but when we asked for a dining table we were ushered to a private dining room towards the rear. The elderly gentleman who was serving was very friendly and efficient. The menu was full of choice and the food was undoubtedly the best we experienced in Xanten (by far). The wine list was mainly German white but a good range to choose from across dry to sweet. Our dry Niersteiner actually went very well with the lamb.
When we first arrived it seemed to be a combination of local club and social hub. The private dining room is at the rear. It is a little rustic but with old school crisp linen and extremely welcoming. The locals were keen to extoll the virtues of the cuisine and very helpful in assisting us with desciphering the menu. On the night we visited, the local Karnival Komittee were in session next door. Along with many trophies and pennants declaring "Xantener Blut Wurst Kommitte 1972", you get the feeling that this is a local hub. The food is very well cooked. My vegetables were perfectly al dente. The wine list is almost exclusively white but these are the best German wines. Very good.
An de Poort under the direction of Georg Holt has a great and varied cuisine, which also offers fresh food in excellent quality in the pick-up service. We could say that last night.
The An de Poort is a traditional host economy (in the 4th generation in family ownership) on the southern edge of the old town. I think the best restaurant in town. I've been there twice for lunch and once for dinner and was very happy. The kitchen is well civic as the interior (a beautiful beer garden is also available). Everything is freshly prepared, not the eternal system gastronomy, as almost everywhere. Be it the cloves for the beef brood or the finely tuned sauce for the roulette. You pay attention to the quality of the products and do not give yourself any palate in preparation. The service was professional, very friendly and customer-oriented. For lunch, even partially cheaper than the economies on the market, this place is highly recommended.
It is a beautiful rustic restaurant. The service is very attentive.
