Took over fifteen minutes before our order was taken, and then another 30 or so minutes before our order arrived at the table. This was One carrot cake (arrived within minutes of ordering), one apple strudel and two soups. These finally arrived when we chased the staff up. we realised that the outside tables were receiving all the attention as people were coming in to select heir cakes and they were then taken to the kitchen to be plated and the taken to customers. There appeared to be only one chef in the small kitchen preparing what appeared to be interesting dishes, but never enough to justify the very slow service. The soup when it arrived was very nice, and no complaints about the carrot cake or strudel. Another problem is that they do cakes for takeaway. This means that customers are coming in and selecting their cake and it being taken to the kitchen to be wrapped. This was taking precedence over seated customers. Other customers in the dining area were having to chase for their orders as well. Even a regular. There is also an upstairs seating area and would not liked to have been waiting up there for any service. Lack of organisation was the main problem. Everyone was concentrating on the outside and nobody was looking after the inside sections. So be prepared to wait.
On arriving in Andernach and parking close to the old city walls we strolled into the market square and decided to have a short, late lunch at the Cafe Winzig. The weather was sufficiently mild enough in late March to sit outside. We re-arranged the patio chairs and tables to accommodate our party of 6 baby and waited for a rather churlish young lady to step out of the warmth of the café to provide us with menus and eventually take our orders. She did not appear that friendly and seemed somewhat impatient with us which I did not appreciate at all. Our request to warm some baby food was also received in a pretty abrupt and unfriendly manner leaving us with something to discuss. I would certainly recommend that she attends some training on providing a service with a smile… As to our short lunch most of us has toasted cheese type sandwiches. I ordered a plate of smoked salmon/rösti with creamy horseradish sauce washed down with hot chocolate. That was nice. Towards the end of the meal another waitress, perhaps the manager/owner came out and offered us comfortable cushions for the chairs to sit on. That was a nice gesture but again left us wondering why the previous waitress hadn’t thought of such a thing for us. In short, a nice place in a nice, quiet square in this town but the friendliness of the service needs to be improved.
The smallish Cafe Winzig is located at the Market Square and also has a charming outside seating area, overlooking the square and the local street life. We went here for a late breakfast, which was good indeed. Prices are reasonable, so the value for money is good. Service is good and friendly.
I have tried to get a seat in this cafe for s quite few times, but it was always fully occupied! I think I can easily call it as the most cozy and best cafe in Andernach. As a big fan of carrot cakes I would advise giving a try to the one they offer!
Stopped for coffee and something to eat. Nice selection of cakes, which made our mouths water. We were not disappointed.
