I sent Grainne boxes to all of my clients last year and they were well received. This mostly online bakery (you can buy in person at the Sweet Shoppe on Main St in Deep River) makes top-notch takes on classics like chocolate chip cookies, brownies and shortbread. It's stuff anyone will love made with local ingredients, so it has a good story behind it too.
As their website says, Grainne Baking Co is a line of sweets and treats handmade in Deep River, Connecticut. It's mail-order (or I guess online-order) only, although Jillian does make appearances at local farmers' markets and holiday markets. I've sampled her fruit&nut granola bars, amazingly decadent brownies, sea salt chocolate chunk cookies, and brown sugar shortbread buttons, and always go for a second helping. I love that she utilizes local ingredients and tells you straight off that your order will be shipped in a few days so she can make everything fresh. It's an easy gift to send and you know the recipient will be happy. I've started to order a snack or two before a work meeting, both to help spread the word of Grainne and to satisfy my sweets cravings.

I had to add that we send out my family from gráinne gifts for vacation. they were really beautiful and attractive wood gift boxes packed and very well preserved. my brother tried to convince his wife that corpses came into the package, but she didn't believe him. fortunately there were enough cookies for them. my wife also surprised me with a gift box, and I am happy to mix the sea salt chocolate chip cookies as I write! Previous review: okay, I was traveled in the past about her website, but they were a gast baker on the putnam saturday farm market this year and I was so chained. one of the biggest questions we get on this market is when is gráinne coming back? the use of local ingredients is important to me, but what jillian does with them! the shortbread buttons are simply amazing and it is hard not to eat the whole bag in a session. the sea salt chocolate cookies are hard to eat, but this is a good thing: they are so rich and there is only the right amount of salt to really highlight the chocolate and the whole cookie is a tasty bite. then my wife bought me one of her pistachio honeybunks and I wish I could say it took a long time, but it was too good not to eat immediately. really. I am glad that gráinne has no closer filiale, as I would be too often there. I have the online store for later this year...and beyond.
