Just passing through Doncaster on a long journey by car. Needed something substantial to eat and pulled over at Fish Bits 35 High St, Bentley, Doncaster, this is a takeaway only. Ordered a medium 'fish and chips ', this cost £6.40. The fish and chips were boxed in a nice cardboard tray with lid and then wrapped up in paper. I did drive a few miles to find a quiet spot to eat. I was dismayed to not find any fork or napkins, in the end my fingers were covered in grease with only the paper wrapping to wipe with. The fish was a good piece but the batter was dripping with grease. The chips were ok but too many, even for a big and hungry man. Average experience at premium prices.
After having a few takeaways from here during lockdown, we decided to try the restaurant. We live half an hour drive away so eating in is definitely more convenient. It was very busy which was good to see, and a great atmosphere with clearly a few regulars present. We had a salt pepper squid for starter, the medium cod chips with mushy peas and two drinks. The squid was lovely, cooked just right and the cod was perfect. Just the right amount of chips (most places give you way too many) and nice to have mushy peas that don't taste of their soaking liquid. Given how busy it was, the service was pretty good, and friendly too. We will return again.
My girlfriend is celiac, so I have called ahead to place an order for her. The first time I called, a friendly gentleman assured me that they have a separate fryer to cook gluten-free chips, which was greatly appreciated. However, the next two times a woman answered and informed me that the chips are fried in the same oil as the batter, so they cannot be considered gluten-free. Despite my previous experience with gluten-free options, she was dismissive and unhelpful. Fortunately, the gentleman answered the last time and kindly agreed to turn on the gluten-free fryer for us. It is important for all staff to be aware of the restaurant's capabilities, especially when it comes to accommodating customers with autoimmune diseases like celiac or food allergies. Despite some inconsistencies, overall, it is a decent place to get fish and chips.
After the Nandos Debacle we contacted Fish Bits and were fortunate enough to get a table for 7 due to a cancellation. Excellent service and very good food. Nice cheery atmosphere, a pleasure to be there. Only downside I found was that parking is a bit hit and miss
