When we arrived, the place was packed with locals watching the Dublin vs Kerry Rugby match. Despite being told there would be a half-hour wait for food, we were lucky enough to snag a large empty table in the middle of the pub to watch the game. Although we were not familiar with Rugby, we cheered for the local team. Unfortunately, they did not win, but the evening was saved by a talented trio of musicians who entertained us with live music for the rest of the night. It was truly magical! The staff at McGees were fantastic. Despite the busy atmosphere, they were organized, efficient, and their personalities shone through. The food was exceptional – we both ordered the baked salmon and were extremely impressed with the chef's skills. Overall, our night at McGees was the highlight of our trip to Ireland. It didn't feel like a tourist trap; instead, it was a genuine experience where we even made new friends. Our table was so large that we ended up sharing it with another couple who were also traveling through Ireland. It's amazing how four strangers can have so much in common. Though we may never see them again, for those three hours at McGees, we were best friends.
I had a fantastic dining experience at McGee's last Sunday evening, followed by a traditional music session with Blackie O'Connell playing the uilleann pipes. It was a lot of fun.
We spent the evening listening to trad music and hanging out with the locals. It gets packed but has a great atmosphere.
We ate here two nights, and were pleased both times. The first night, it was SLAMMED. A tour bus showed up and dumped a bus full of tourists. The pub had not expected it, and even though it was pretty stressful for them, they were still friendly to the other patrons and gave timely service. I had the lamb shank and the stew--both were fantastic, but if you like lamb, GET THE LAMB. One of the best lamb shanks I've ever had.
