We appreciated the restaurant's secluded atmosphere and found the dinner menu to be limited yet well-curated. The reception and service were excellent. We chose a New Zealand Chardonnay and can highly recommend the seafood chowder and lamb shank. We almost consider 1908 Cafe to be a hidden gem.
In my opinion, it's more of a charming restaurant with a cozy, old-world atmosphere than a cafe. The food is delicious, making it a great spot for a date.
For our main courses, we both ordered the rib-eye steak. We found the steak to be a bit tough, and the flavors were unbalanced; the tomato base it was served on overpowered the dish. Additionally, the meal lacked any crispy texture, and we were surprised to learn that vegetables were an extra cost. Overall, while I would consider returning to this restaurant because of the beautiful setting, I would definitely avoid ordering the steak again.
Diamond in the rough. From the outside it appears as just a slightly larger than normal cafe. Once inside however it's a very intimate dinner spot with several rooms with tables and a very down to earth feel. The food was excellent! We had the chicken venison that are pictured. Definitely was one of our favorite meals in Dunedin. Beautifully prepared and excellent tasting. Highly recommend stopping in for dinner if you're out on the peninsula.
We stumbled across this lovely restaurant one evening while exploring the peninsula. The staff were great, very friendly. This beautiful restaurant has character and charm with a relaxed ambiance that even left the kids feeling at home. Pauline's lamb shank was divine, definitely worth trying! Thanks 1908 staff for a lovely evening and a delicious meal.
