I went there around 11am. There were only a few bagels behind the glass case. The nice service clerk offered to bake me some fresh bagels if what I wanted was not available. I only wanted a 1 sesame bagel and 1 poppy seed bagel and they had one left of each so it worked out. Kudos for offers to bake them fresh if I needed more.
The spreads are the highlight here, but still a far cry from the real thing back east. I liked the whitefish salad. The bagels are probably pick of the litter for the area. But no crunchy outsides, the wrong chew, and even the toppings are off (the onions are soggy like a bialy, not crunchy as they should be). Bagels with swirls (pumpernickel/rye) seem like a crime against both flavors. No coffee bar/made to order, but they did have a self-serve canister of breakfast blend this morning, seemed fine to me. I'll be back.
My wife from NY says these are the best in the Bay Area. Fresh is ideal, but they can be frozen, microwaved for 30 seconds, and then toasted to give about 90% the quality we pack our deep freeze, since it is a bit of a drive to get them more than once every few weeks.
The best bagels in the world wishes from New Germany. I come back with my family and friends... best wishes wishes to MMXVI
