Located right on Jasper Avenue in the bustling part of downtown, it's a great spot for after work drinks or late night eats. I went on the weekend for a friend's private event and we were all impressed by the exceptional service. They worked hard to make it a seamless event in their cozy but hip space.
I had some hesitation about Alta due to seeing mixed reviews but decided to try it because of the emphasis on local food. I am very glad I gave it a shot because I had one of the best meal I have enjoyed in Edmonton. The chef prepares and serves your food, and is paid a living wage, so no tipping.Pickled plums, rice pudding, and mussels were highlights. The menu changes every few weeks. Reasonably priced.
Finally a place that carries Alberta inspired dishes based on our traditions, culture and seasons. The execution is good, and that's the important part. They are authentic and I hope that people who really believe in eating local and all of that support this place because it's legit.
I went to this place for a business lunch. The bread we ordered was warm, can't say the same for the staff who were all too busy being edgy to care much that they had paying customers. The food was more interesting than actually good and I had to try harder than it should take to like it. Other than the sourdough bread with cultured butter the food was small and not paired well. The salmon I had was very good on its own but the pickles it came with detracted from the flavor. Most things are served at room temperature, including the water. Better to hit the food trucks outside: better food and better value.
