Although Kottakkal is now known as the Ayurveda city of Kerala, its history dates back to the medieval period when it was the military base of the Valluvanadu dynasty. The numerous fortifications and castles built by the rulers are believed to be the reason for the area being called Kottakkal. While the remains of these fortifications still exist, the presence of institutions like the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, Ayurveda college, medicinal plants garden, and domestic and foreign visitors seeking Ayurvedic treatments have transformed it into an Ayurveda city. The city's development is rapid, with a growing number of buildings, showrooms, and restaurants. Located after Malappuram on the way to Ernakulam, we stopped here for lunch, as the restaurants are quite good. Despite the city's rapid development in terms of buildings and vehicles, the atmosphere is not too polluted, with visible plantations and greenery around.
