We wanted a 'nice dinner ' to contrast with the camping cuisine of a couple of nights and this was pretty much the only place we found in Mauriac. Don 't be put off by the exterior, or the interior for that matter, because I would hope that you 'll enjoy the delicious food and good service that we did.
On a hot, 34c, Monday lunchtime in Mauriac we were looking for somewhere for lunch to escape the heat. As is often the case in France on a Monday the restaurant we had planned to eat at was closed so we went on the hunt for an alternative. We were a party of 6 with 3 generations of the family ranging from 5 years old to 95 years old. Whilst the exterior of the Ecu de France wasn’t overly appealing, spoilt by an unsympathetic street level extension the various menus outside seemed to suggest there was a decent range of food on offer. Whilst the restaurant looked busy with diners we were greeted by a very friendly waitress who confirmed a table for 6 was available. After a drink in the traditional looking bar area we were shown to our table in the restaurant. I’m pleased to say that the interior of the restaurant is in a sharp contrast to the exterior and has a contemporary look having been recently refurbished. We had a large table and there was a good atmosphere and buzz in the busy restaurant with a mix of couples and families dining. There was an excellent choice of “menus” or the ability to choose a la Carte. The obviously busy staff were very attentive providing a seemingly endless top up of water and bread. We all ordered different dishing and they were happy to accommodate the kids request for a substitute starter. All the meal were really superb the presentation was excellent, the favours and quality first rate. Furthermore the value for money was incredible. The 3 course menu du jour with 1/3 carafe of wine was only 13 euros, the 3 course children’s menu 8 euro and the 3 course menu I selected from only 18 euro with wine extra. Two further menu options were available at 23 and 28 euro. Lunch on this hot Monday proved to be an extremely enjoyable, relaxed experience in an unexpectedly good restaurant with great food that perfectly set us up for a lazy afternoon by the pool at Lac St Jean. In a town of relatively limited dining options this was a great find and we’ll definitely be back.
This is, without doubt, the best restaurant in Mauriac; although I must say there isn't a lot of choice! The lady who runs the place, literally does run around ensuring good service. The menu is extensive and includes some excellent regional dishes. I'd especially recommend the pork escalope in apple and mushroom. The restaurant has recently been redecorated and is nicely done. The wine list caters for all tastes and is not too expensive. It pays to book in the evenings and at weekends as they are often full.
Don't go to Mauriac! Practically the only restaurant open on Sunday. Local products offered including a good aligot! No menus offered but prices are correct.
