A piece of wilderness just off the N2. Camping and cabins with spotlessly clean ablutions, washing machines and cooking facilities. We camped off grid right by the river but there are also on grid sites too. We did a couple of lovely walks and a game drive which included zebra, bontebok, grysbok and Denham’s bustard. We swam in the river and you can also find places to fish. Marloth nature reserve and it’s beautiful waterfall hikes are close by as is Swellendam and it’s historical museums. Two nights wasn’t enough.
It was difficult to get in touch to make a reservation, but we ultimately stayed at a lovely riverside site. The sites lack electricity and running water, but they are still worth visiting. However, be cautious of bull thorns scattered throughout the lawn - bicycles, children, and inflatable mattresses should be kept away. Due to erosion, the campsite by the river is slowly disappearing, and it appears that management is not taking any action to address the issue. While the wildlife in the park may not be as abundant as some visitors hope for, the focus is more on the river and vegetation experience rather than animal sightings. Despite these drawbacks, it is still recommended to visit this park.
The park is lovely with opportunities for walking or mountain biking alone, as there are no dangerous predators. It is also a great spot for a day visit along the Breede River, where you can fish. The staff are friendly. However, there isn't much game to see, or they are very good at hiding. During our visit to Bontebok Park, we only saw 3 Bontebok. The most common animal we saw was the Mountain Zebra.
We loved our stay in this awesome park. Neat, large stands with great ablutions and kitchen facilities. Well maintained by staff and reception staff super efficient and friendly. The hikes were great and the scenery of the river and mountains were breathtaking. Well done Sanparks.
