Room was clean and basic with a working wood fireplace. Places to hike and a short walk to the rim of the volcano. History happened here and it is worth learning that history.
We rented a two-bedroom, two-bath unit with a kitchen. The master bathroom was smaller than the guest room (which had two beds) with its own bathroom, but honestly, it was just fine! The units are quite old, built in 1916, so keep your expectations in check—this is not the Hilton. Nevertheless, it's impressive to see the effort the staff puts into maintaining these historic cabins and cottages. Our unit had beautiful antique doorknobs and plates. Due to COVID, the kitchen seemed to have been affected—there were no supplies at all, not even salt and pepper. This probably explains why the General Store (also known as AAFES) had a lot of essentials. Compared to the Airbnb we stayed at in Kona, which had everything we needed, we felt a bit disappointed in that regard. However, the kitchen was equipped with everything necessary for cooking, including plates, cups, and utensils, but we did miss coffee filters, for example. KMC is undoubtedly the best place to stay for exploring the National Park. There’s a small village called Volcano just outside the main park that offers some supplies if you find yourself running low. If you fly into Kona, you can visit a KTA market to stock up or do your shopping in Hilo. Keep in mind that the "General Store" at KMC typically closes at 7 PM most days, and there is a second AAFES at the Pohakuloa Training Area that operates with limited hours, usually closing at 1 PM daily. Depending on your schedule, you might want to stop by and stock up before arriving at KMC. Overall, I highly recommend KMC, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
I highly recommend this place for veterans and active duty members. The cottages are very clean and recently renovated. There's a bar and recreation area as well. I tried a tasty burger for just $3.25 at the bowling alley, which is a fantastic deal compared to the $18.99 burger I had in Kohala last week. The prices are very reasonable, and the location is excellent.
This is a fantastic place to stay for military families or those with referrals. It offers a general store, laundry facilities, a cafe, a restaurant, a bowling alley, a recreation room, a bar, a post office, and a fitness center—essentially everything you could need. Situated within a National Park, it’s just a short walk to crater viewing and various hiking opportunities.
KMC is fantastic. Nice cabins, well kept and sleeping under the red glow of the volcano!
