Best in summer in their large garden with tables under large trees, you will find a big variety of local food delights and local wine. Prices are not cheap, but also not overpriced, and the food is consistently good. With family and friends, it feels like on the country side in good old times.
Great location, especially in Summer with a nice outside eating area. The inside in Winter is not bad either. The service was excellent. The food was good. I do have a problem with a menu that lists probably one hundred different dishes. How can anyone have all these ingredients ready??, preferably fresh!!
Muggenbühl is located in Zürich Wollishofen and you feel like you are in the countryside. They have a beautiful garden and the restaurant itself is very charming. The menu is huge with lots of choices. However, my sirloin with veggies and potatoes gratin was great and the portion big. Also my wife was happy with her minced beef Zürich style with Rösti.
While staying in Sihl City in Zurich I was longing for some good old-fashioned Swiss/German style of food. Not the modern twisted food the restaurants in moden Sihl City provide. Luckily one stop away on the S4 train line (Brunau) was Muggenbuehl. It was busy but no problem to get a table for myself. The fact that many older Swiss were eating there with friends and having a good time was a good sign and I was not disappointed. There is a separate room for smokers and 2 rooms for non-smokers. The menu is very extensive!I had the cordon bleu which was very tasty, and I got my food within 10 minutes! Prices are also quite moderate for Swiss standards. My portion was also quite big, had trouble finishing it.So I can really recommend this place, also from a price-quality point of view. Also nice to spend an evening with friends.
Visited this place on a weekday evening with work colleagues, easy to find by public transport as literally outside Brunau train station (take s4 train from Zurich main station), but plenty of parking also available. The restaurant is in an old Swiss style chalet on an elevated level. I would imagine in the summer the views to be quite nice, but on this cold winter dark evening I could not confirm this.Restaurant has 2-3 breakout areas housing 4-6 tables each as well as a room where one can opt t sit with smokers if they wish (your choice!).Restaurant menu is very large with lots of pieces of paper attached with various offerings, this was a bit confusing and something which they could do without. Perhaps a single leaflet with daily specials would be good, or a blackboard/ waiter announcing what these may be.Typical Swiss fare on offer otherwise (Cordon Bleu, Steaks, Veal, Pork, Lamb and Chicken as well as local freshwater fish. Unusually also with vegetarian options)I had a safe option of whole baby chicken with salad which was excellently made and being served with a finger bowl showed that it was acceptable to dig in with my fingers, so no poncy stuff. My colleges seemed to go more for the beef which looked good and feedback was positive.Wine offering was good and service excellent (for Zurich this is a good sign, the waiters were helpful and didn't mention if we made a mistake in our booking as a problem, they just rectified it, for example ordering salad instead of chips).Meal was wrapped up with nice German type of desserts (again lots of paper in the menu which made it look commercial), coffees and good grappa.Given the amount of wine we had had the bill was surprisingly acceptable, we had spent a good 3 hours there and not once were we made to feel hurried whilst around us older folk carried on eating and playing cards whilst sipping on night caps! This place is a safe bet for a good reasonable meal with good service and one I would recommend. The mark down is for the menu style only !
